Suggest a roaster between a Behmor and a Buckeye

Newbie Posts: 13 Joined: December 08, 2008	What roaster is out there that is between a Behmor at $400 and the most basic buckeye roaster at $3800? I've done the popcorn air popper, the Whirley pop and the Corretto method (bread maker / hot air gun). I would truly like at least a 1kg roaster and would prefer a 2 kg unit. I see things like the Behmor Jake, but can't find pricing or release date, the Bullet is out there. I use to see the Commorant at $1500 but recently that unit has crept up to close to $2500. Just like everyone else I want a $5K roaster at $1500. I see the Kaldis Fortis and the Huky but the Huky is approaching $2500 these days too. Short question. What can I buy that's better than a Behmor and a 25 minute roast cycle for $400 and cost less than $1500? A Hot Top? Used Hot top? I have NO special electrical skills and I don't want to start a roaster building project in January and finish it in June. Just frustrated in this journey. I could roast close to a pound loved the results with the Corretto method. I like to roast but even at $10/pound you could drink a lot of coffee for what it takes to roast your own. Administrator Posts: 3005 Joined: September 30, 2016	My advice is to build a TO based oven. Is where I ended for some 2-3 years after a journey similar with yours. Gathering all the parts is the longer story, once I have everything on the table I can build a 750 grams machine in 2 hours. No metal working required, just drilling and screw. Electronics are a different story, you can complicate it as much as your skills allows, but the important point is that you can start roast, and have good results, just with the lid thermostat, a timer, your senses, and no thermometer. About Cormorant, is what I recommend to anyone ask me about a commercial machine in this price/capacity range. The first units were priced at 1600 GBP, i.e. $2100, same is today too:https://www.cormo...ce-list-2/ ...never seen this machine under $ 2000, maybe is a currency mismatch... or shipping not included... Anyway, it's a fine machine, no second hand offerings speaks a lot, unlike Huky or Bullet, who are for sale often.

Newbie Posts: 14 Joined: January 01, 2020	I have a Behmor 1600 which I have used for some 15 years. I recently did some research looking for a higher priced roaster that would do at least a pound. In the thousand dollar range the units I found did 4 or 8 ounces of coffee. Forget that, I stuck with the Behmor. It has never failed, does an adequate job and I know how it toasts. I will consider the new Behmor when it comes out however...john

Administrator Posts: 3005 Joined: September 30, 2016	You probably are right... until recently. For some people one pound roast at a time could be too much, $449 also could be too much. The machine itself volume is not negligible. So today we have SR800, with the same $/gram ratio as behmor, but half load, half price, smaller, and not the last... better and more intuitive control options. So some people could have now a reason to pay less than for a Behmor, and get almost the same, perhaps better, as customer satisfaction.

Administrator Posts: 3005 Joined: September 30, 2016	What I would NOT recommend for sure, is this SR5xx clone, which has significant flaws: https://www.aliex...16897.html As it came, the heat can't be controlled at all, there is no SSR inside, the lo-mid-hi heater knob is there only for display, power is full always, turning into charcoal the beans in two minutes. Even worse, the heat is so big, about 400 C, that the chaff collector, made from bakelite, cracked at second attempt. I have one atm on the workbench, to replace the whole electronics with a custom version of TC4ESP.
