Ventilation for Kaldi Wide
mtbizzle
I'm building an airflow/ventilation system for my small Kaldi wide. There is a small pipe that the hopper fits onto https://i.imgur.c...IQ4SyH.jpg - this is where exhaust air would be pulled from. I believe a 1 1/4" pipe fits over it.

I'm open to other approaches (e.g. affordable centrifugal fan?)... Trying to find a solution that will allow for chaff management.

My current plan ran into a problem. I have a cyclone separator with 1" outflow hole - https://i.imgur.c...2NkQMO.jpg

I also have a 6" diameter inline ducting fan - https://i.imgur.c...EfS537.jpg.

The fan comes after the separator, so I need a way to connect these -- 1" to 6". It's easy to find HVAC reducers that are 6" to 4", but not 6" to 1" or 4" to 1".

Any ideas for a part that would work here?

My original plan was: T joint attaching to roaster > pipe to cyclone separator > adapter/reducer/ducting? > 6" inline ducting fan
Roast: Kaldi wide, SR800 + projects
Grind: Lab sweet, Bentwood, giota w/ MP burrs, Commandante
Pull: Decent, La Pavoni, Elektra Microcasa a Leva, Faemina anno 60, Kim Express

I am using the same cyclone, coupled with a similar ducted fan, but 4".
The coupling I did myself, using a funnel, a 4" kitchen ss funnel, removed the pipe and enlarged the hole to 30mm, to fit the cyclone exhaust pipe.
Sealed everything with alu adhesive tape.

That makes sense, thank you Renatoa Grin If you get the chance I would love to see a photo.

Since you use the same cyclone.

How did you attach your roaster to the cyclone input? I am thinking of using a copper pipe.
Is your funnel + 4" ducting stable on top of the cyclone exhaust? No stability problem, with aluminum tape on ducting and the cyclone?

The alu tape is for sealing only, not for support.
Instead alu tape works also kapton tape as well, measured about 80 C at cyclone exit.

For support I have three M5 threaded rods passing through the cyclone mounting ears, that extend both sides, up and down.
Down they extend to the cyclone exit hole, and screw into the jar cover.
Up they extend to the exhaust fan level. The rods and fan are embraced by a screw hose clamp that make the whole assembly rigid enough.
The three rods are actually the pillars that support the whole assembly, from collecting jar to the exhaust fan.

As input pipe I am using a metal/plastic flexible pipe called Copex here:

A picture when reaching the roaster location.

No picture yet, but a question, regarding the fan choice.
The cyclone datasheet say 45-70m3/h, the 4" unit is rated 140, the 6" unit 224m?/h, both seems overcharging the cyclone, why did you choose 6" ?
My choice was been based on dimensions, I want sometime, when experiments ends, to have both hosted in a single straight enclosure... fan and cyclone fits both nicely aligned in an 110 mm stainless steel pipe, so this was...

I bought it maybe... 4-6 months ago, I am not even sure my reason at this point.

I can use the 6" inline fan as a bean cooler. At this point, I'm just trying to figure out a workable plan for ventilation & chaff management. I am moving 1/20/2021 and hope to use this Kaldi with ventilation/chaff control once I move... That Kopex looks useful, seems hard to find similar products though!

I hope somehow I can piece together a plan from what others have done. Some people seem to just use a centrifugal fan or in line fan and ducting. I worry that is a big fire hazard (chaff).

I have looked read about many other people's DIY ventilation systems... In case this is useful to anyone else, here are a collection of photos of DIY ventilation for a small roaster -- https://imgur.com...

For pipe, check here:
https://www.amazo...07DX71842/
Search terms: "Coated Liquid-Tight" "Steel Flexible Metal Conduit"

This is closest to mine:
https://i.imgur.c...Q4h26F.jpg
... with the differences:
- threaded rods are fitted in the jar cover itself, without any intermediate flange
- they extend upwards, and serve as support for the fan, because the three mounting ears holes are exactly on a 10" circle, same as the fan diameter. So everything is in line nicely, hourglass shaped.

Interesting to see people is using the plastic version, without melting... huh...

Interesting, thanks renatoa. I can imagine your set up a little bit better now. Roaster > flexible conduit pipe > separator > stainless kitchen funnel > 4" ducting fan.

A first draft...

https://www.lowes...gs/3506648 - connecting roaster to ventilation
https://www.amazo...07DX71842/ - to cyclone separator
https://www.amazo...07KH1JHTG/ - cyclone exhaust to 4" ducting fan
https://www.amazo...07ZL6FDYG/ - 4" ducting fan (104cfm, but adjustable...)
https://www.amazo...07WRDTX4C/ - exhaust ducting

+ aluminum tape... I have hi temp silicone as well.

What did you use for the chaff jar? I was thinking maybe of just using a small 1 quart paint can. Can drill holes for the threaded bolts in the removeable top/lid of the paint can... Remove top to detach chaff jar and empty...

https://www.lowes...1000380057 - Plenty of diameter - 7.5 in

Tin can would be my preference too, but I can't find here something empty, and clean Grin
So I am using a standard glass jar, with tin cover.

My fan is from eBay, very close to this:
www.amazon.com/Hu...B08HWS44XN
... motor is 20W instead 12W, and CFM bigger, accordingly

About to purchase the conduit, but -- PVC coated -- PVC is rated to 140F/60C -- that will melt right???

I have found places that sell extreme temperature liquid tight metal conduits, but the smallest amount is $530 for 25 feet...

Yeah, was a random result I got from Amazon, mostly for the search terms.
Even the size isn't right, you need 30 mm internal diameter, the cyclone pipe is 1"/25mm internal, with 2 mm walls.
You don't need it covered with plastic, it can be naked, and you can "coat" with some heat shrink tube, which some are rated up to 260 C.
Or go with rigid copper solution, the copex example was just because is very popular here, but it doesn't have to be the same elsewhere... for example we don't have bake-a-round Grin

Had today a talk with someone working in paint industry and he warned me that tin cans aren't guaranteed to maintain tightness for multiple open/close cycles.
Vacuum is a requirement for the correct cyclone principle operation, any air leakage led to chaff exhaust through the fan instead collecting in the can.
