Ventilation for Kaldi Wide

1/4 Pounder Posts: 101 Joined: April 22, 2020	I'm building an airflow/ventilation system for my small Kaldi wide. There is a small pipe that the hopper fits onto https://i.imgur.c...IQ4SyH.jpg - this is where exhaust air would be pulled from. I believe a 1 1/4" pipe fits over it. I'm open to other approaches (e.g. affordable centrifugal fan?)... Trying to find a solution that will allow for chaff management. My current plan ran into a problem. I have a cyclone separator with 1" outflow hole - https://i.imgur.c...2NkQMO.jpg I also have a 6" diameter inline ducting fan - https://i.imgur.c...EfS537.jpg. The fan comes after the separator, so I need a way to connect these -- 1" to 6". It's easy to find HVAC reducers that are 6" to 4", but not 6" to 1" or 4" to 1". Any ideas for a part that would work here? My original plan was: T joint attaching to roaster > pipe to cyclone separator > adapter/reducer/ducting? > 6" inline ducting fan Roast: Kaldi wide, SR800 + projects Grind: Lab sweet, Bentwood, giota w/ MP burrs, Commandante Pull: Decent, La Pavoni, Elektra Microcasa a Leva, Faemina anno 60, Kim Express

The coupling I did myself, using a funnel, a 4" kitchen ss funnel, removed the pipe and enlarged the hole to 30mm, to fit the cyclone exhaust pipe. Sealed everything with alu adhesive tape.

That makes sense, thank you Renatoa If you get the chance I would love to see a photo. Since you use the same cyclone. How did you attach your roaster to the cyclone input? I am thinking of using a copper pipe. Is your funnel + 4" ducting stable on top of the cyclone exhaust? No stability problem, with aluminum tape on ducting and the cyclone? Administrator Posts: 3005 Joined: September 30, 2016	The alu tape is for sealing only, not for support. Instead alu tape works also kapton tape as well, measured about 80 C at cyclone exit. For support I have three M5 threaded rods passing through the cyclone mounting ears, that extend both sides, up and down. Down they extend to the cyclone exit hole, and screw into the jar cover. Up they extend to the exhaust fan level. The rods and fan are embraced by a screw hose clamp that make the whole assembly rigid enough. The three rods are actually the pillars that support the whole assembly, from collecting jar to the exhaust fan. The cyclone datasheet say 45-70m3/h, the 4" unit is rated 140, the 6" unit 224m?/h, both seems overcharging the cyclone, why did you choose 6" ? My choice was been based on dimensions, I want sometime, when experiments ends, to have both hosted in a single straight enclosure... fan and cyclone fits both nicely aligned in an 110 mm stainless steel pipe, so this was...

Even the size isn't right, you need 30 mm internal diameter, the cyclone pipe is 1"/25mm internal, with 2 mm walls. You don't need it covered with plastic, it can be naked, and you can "coat" with some heat shrink tube, which some are rated up to 260 C. Or go with rigid copper solution, the copex example was just because is very popular here, but it doesn't have to be the same elsewhere... for example we don't have bake-a-round

Had today a talk with someone working in paint industry and he warned me that tin cans aren't guaranteed to maintain tightness for multiple open/close cycles. Vacuum is a requirement for the correct cyclone principle operation, any air leakage led to chaff exhaust through the fan instead collecting in the can. Edited by renatoa on 01/03/2021 3:14 AM
