The heatgun almost died during last night's roast. At about 250F, beans starting to yellow, I noticed an off-odor. At first I thought it might be the coffee since I hadn't roasted this one before. Few seconds later I recalled that electronic equipment operates on smoke - if you let the smoke out, it doesn't operate. I started to pull the heatgun off to check it out and the handle was VERY hot, and it shouldn't be. So I put it to the side.
What to do with a pound of 250F half-roasted coffee? Frying pan? Throw it out? Get out the poppers. I pulled out my two backup poppers and loaded as much as I could in each one (which is a little more than usual since the beans were a little lighter). By the time the poppers finished, the rest of the half-roast had cooled, but was still warm, and it went in too.
My hope is that since the interruption was before first crack, the coffee will still be drinkable... we'll see.

Jeffrey Pawlan is big into double-roasting. He presented at one of the Roasting Guild sessions in San Diego a few years ago. He has also developed a computer controlled roasting device.
We have all done this horrid under roasting thing.
Last night I was lazy and tossed (read not measured) some African
into my Hot Top.
I could tell it was a bit too much weight when it was not coming into 1st crack
at around the proper time (if there is really a proper time.)
So at 420 not into full 1st crack I dumped it. It is a great City roast. I will try I say to myself, so instead of dumping it in the garbage I take it out, cooled it and toss 1/2 into the hopper of my Solis 5K.
Darker would have been better for my taste but this was a wide range green from City to FC plus so I decided to keep 1/2 back to re-roast.
I did re-roast and it ended up to be a full city plus in perhaps 2/3rd time with Hot Top cooled and pre-heat in setup.
I will not have any until tomorrow am.
I had a cafe crema this afternoon with the original roast and it was not bright, much smoother and had a very warm/velvet mouth feel which surprised me for a City roast.

Been away a bit -- just read the last 3 pages of the Datalogger thread. wow. You all amaze me -- this forum is the most productive and creative crowdsourcing I've seen... at just 1,234 strong. :T
