Dialed in some fruit insanity on some Idido Misty Valley for several friends weekly beans today. Haul swiftly to 394F in 7minutes (air temp in air roaster is 550F), then progress at 8deg/min to 435F for a 12min roast, 5 of which spent developing sweet fruity goodness. Smells like crushed fresh blueberries only half an hour after roast. No roast odors, nothing chocolate, nothing even hinting at coffee: just fruit. Envy: didn't keep the overage for myself. -Marshall Hance

I see in the sidebar that John Despres is asking me what's in my roaster. I chose at random, since I'm just starting and have no idea what to roast. My very first 3 roasts, in a Toastmaster 6203 popper, were Guatamala SHB EP Estate Antigua "Los Volcanes", by accident. Tomorrow morning I get to try Costa Rica SHB EP "Carreta Azul", which I'm expecting to taste better than my first three experiments. (I don't suppose John Despres is my former roommate from Adams House -- I think the last name is spelled differently.)

This week I received 10# of Organic Yirg, 15# of Guatemala Trapichitos, and the CoE beans I won in the auction, so I'm conflicted. I'm beginning to suspect that this weekend's roasting will be several 1/4# roasts along with a half pound of the base Brasil Formosa I've been using for blends, then mix 'em on the fly all week, as well as some SO espresso shots.

Hi, Greg. Nope, I don't think so - Adams House doesn't ring a bell. Welcome, and keep us posted on future roasts. And be sure to let us know how those first three taste! I'll be loading up the roaster tomorrow morning for the week. I haven't made my choices, but I think there will be some Ethiopia, and some Yemen warming up for certain. John Respect the bean.

Of the 6 batches I've roasted in my Toastmaster popper, only one was so bad that I couldn't drink it at all, and #5, Indonesia Sumatra Lintong, "Kuda Mas", which I'm drinking right now, is pretty good. It's as good as the best pre-roasted coffee I've had, but of course I'm hoping to do better. What kinds of green coffee would be best bets for doing a French roast in a popper? (For now, perhaps it doesn't make much difference, since my results are dominated by wild variations in my roasting technique.) Greg

Greg, I'd say just relax and enjoy. I personally started with five pounds of Columbian, but an Indonesian would be another good choice. Have fun! -bill |

El Salvador Santa Rita Full Natural! LOVE THIS COFFEE!! Been sitting on a lb of this for several months. Had to buy more before it was all gone after the 1st lb I roasted several months back. My condo smells like dried apricots and the coffee smells like apricot buttered popcorn! INTOXICATING! Cant wait til saturday morning to drink some! I hope some more of this is around later in the year and that it's as good as this batch was! |

I've been working through 5 lbs of Flores Manggarai the last several weeks. Much different than all the dry-process beans I've been roasting for the last year or so. For the life of me I can't understand why I shunned Indonesian coffees for so long, the Manggarai is delicious! :trink25: |

El Salvador La Montanita Pacamara. Roasted 2 minutes north of C1. Smells pretty good right off the roast! It was solid first time I roasted this a while back, but didnt knock my socks off. I tried a little lighter roast this time. |

Uganda Bugisu from SM Sweet, sugary lemon at city+, rather unremarkable at full city+ (not bad, just nothing special). Just roasted a new batch to city this evening, will see if that brings out more of the lemon flavor. |
