With notes & thoughts. This evening - Ethiopia Organic D-P Bonko "Black Sun" 227 Grams Target roast C+ Profile: Preheat to 400F, 3:00 at 400F Set at 400F until 5:00 Bump to 465F at 5:00 Drop to 440F :30 into 1st EOR 1:00 past end of 1st The roast: Charge temp 349F I lose about 50F removing the drum and replacing it, then the cooler beans drop temp another 10F Set 400F Bump to 465F at 5:00 outliers at 10:15 1st at 10:28 This is a good sign with 1st coming so quickly after first outliers - Means I have good drying temp and time in the opening stage 1st crack temp at 441F This is another good sign - the lower the ET at 1st, again, the better the drying temp and time in the first stage Very nice loud, rolling first crack Again a good sign of a great drying stage 11:00 Drop to 440F 12:30 Drop to 435F I did this because I felt I wasn't slowing the roast dropping to a temp so close to the 1st crack temp 13:30 EOR Dump and cool City + Success EOR weight 189 Grams Excellent munch test, excellent internal/external color match. I'm looking forward to a cup of this one on Friday. I'm looking forward to nice body, lots of fruit, and a very nice fruit-sweetness. John Respect the bean.

Yep, that's the Gene Cafe. The JYTT 1k isn't fully operational yet. I still have some drum tweaking to do, maybe a new one... Then final wiring and a nice base for it. I haven't fired it up in maybe a year. Work got crazy busy and it got set aside. Maybe soon, though... Respect the bean.

This Bonko is excellent! Blackberry at the fore, apricot, sweet finish and a syrupy body. There's another fruit I can't pin-point, too. Yum. John Respect the bean.

Ethiopia Organic Guji Sidamo Maduro, Wonderful floral / berry aroma when I removed the lid of the Mason jar after 4 days rest. These greens have been buried deep in the freezer - vac-packed left-over greens from last March roasting comparison. I usually roast these very light in my Popper but this time I used the bread machine/ heat gun setup and pulled just as a few beans were popping at 2nd crack.

Multiple batches of Panama Giesha... Lot 10, lot 3 and lot 2. Brewing the last of this gem or Thanksgiving. Lots 10 and 3 were tests to tune the profile for the very pricey lot 2. I think lot 2 will roast Monday evening. John Respect the bean.

Columbian; don't know the Estate, I get this local from the Coffee Exchange here in OKC good but not the greatest thats out there. This roast is like the fourth roast from my newly unfinished roaster, which means that right now each roast is differant from the one before, which is good as it tells me if I am going the right direction or if I need to change something in the design. Anyway the beans have had all night to rest and are tasting pretty good this morning, beans were in a full rolling second crack when I pulled the roast chamber and dumped into a colondar to cool (should of dumped into my cooling pan with it on the fan), final roasting temp in my roaster (not what everyone else gets) was around 550 degree's. Anyway happy beans to everyone, David ![]() I pour Iron and roast Coffee Beans

Speaking of Panama, I roasted a batch of Panama Carmen Estate 1900 Meters (from SM) a couple of weeks ago. The coffee is wonderful, and as soon as I get back home from this marathon business trip I've got more going right into the roaster. Did I say this coffee is wonderful. Both thumbs way up! Yesterday: El Salvador Los Luchadores, Kenya Kirinaga AA Gakuyu-ini, Yemen Sanani, Guatemala Huehuetenango La Esperanza Pacamara and Costa Rico Hernan Solis Villa Sarchi. I needed some espresso this morning and mixed the El Salvado, Kenya, Yemen and the Cost Rico. So smooth and full bodied that you wouldn't believe it was roasted yesterday. Just finished a 1 pound roast of Columbia Reserva del Patron from the Atomic Cafe here in MA. I also used my new TC4 datalogger running the Gesha software. I am learning much about temperatures and rate of rise with this setup. It is working great! Thanks to Bill Welch and Ed "farmroast" for helping me with this. --Jack Edited by JackH on 07/02/2011 6:24 PM |
