RoasterRob Air Roaster Designs

When I was looking for parts for my roaster I googled "sight glass" lots of round tubes used in pipes to see flow.

Rob, in the Stainless version above, what's your mechanism for opening the dump chute?

Hi Chad, that was the mechanism I described in that PM. Sloped plate tilts into the RC beans are blown up and fal behind the plate instead of landing back on the bean mass and exit out the chute. Worked well. I was looking to use that system again on a larger roaster that I will be building for a friend.

Is it airtight? Hinged? What keeps it closed? Do you just poke something up there to open the door?

The end of the hinge pin was bent at 90 deg to act as a lever. Not sure what held the plate down (that was 5 yrs ago I built that) I think there may have been a catch on the end of the lever. Yes there was a bit of leakage.
The next one that has that system I will try and improve on the seal.

Hi Rob
Just probing your mind
2 questions

1) Would a medium air compressor be powerful enough to equal the vacuum motor

2) To reduce vacuum motor noise? if I was to fit a muffler would one motor be enough or best to use 2 vacuum motors

The pressure would obviously be no problem. It would have to provide at least 100cfm. But then you would need to use a valve to control flow and as such the roast profile. I would stick with the VC. It should be possible to use a muffler that doesn't affect the flow too much. A basic 1kw VC blower is capable of moving 3kg plus so if you are building the 2.3kg roaster it shouldn't be a problem.
If minimise noise you might need to insulate most of the roaster.

Thanks Rob
My thoughts were to fit a muffler and used as the connecting pipe from the vacuum motor to the leg as per your photo

More to stop noise transfer through the system

Good idea to add a cowling enclosure as well to suppress noise

Most of the noise comes from the air intake. I have considered using a car air filter to muffle the intake.
Very little noise comes from the transfer pipe. A lot of the noise from the blower (and its universal motor) is muffled thru the system. If you were to direct duct the exhaust out and insulate the RC and the furnace section and muffle the air intake, The noise would be significantly reduced.

Can you comment on these silent vacuum motors
If suitable or strong enough to do the job

Good information in full available as you scroll down the PDF

Looks like good pressure, CFMs are in the ballpark. I wonder why they didn't put a decibel level? That would have sold some units.

Woah. Silent? I've been loosing my hearing as I neglect to protect my ears for what amounts to 2-3hours of roasting a day. To think I could jam to some tunes while at it is very appealing.

Quieter because they are not a universal motor and probably operate at lower revs. The downside is that a basic triac type controller won't work on them. As for flow and pressure - The VC blowers I use are (my best guess) about 100cfm and around 100' WG (in free air).
The pressure at the beginning of a roast is about 18" the flow I am not sure of.

Is a Variac / variable AC transformer the thing to have here?
We'll see how much the quiet motors cost on Monday...I'm betting over $500.

Your perforation diameter is 3.3mm? What is the pattern for drilling?

Just began the quest for info on this topic
http://www.iperf....ssure.html

FYI: my current perf plate is .125" holes, hexagonal pattern, .22" on center. It works great and is very efficient.

I took a look at the AWT vacuum motors. They use more than the typical 1 to 3 centrifugal stages. That means that the rpms can be lower. If the tangential speed is below the speed of sound or where a lot of cavitation occurs, then the sound will be greatly reduced.

Ditto on them probably not being universal motors.

RoasterRob
Starting to make progress on the 5kg roaster. But no point being able to roast 5 (possibly 6) kg if you can't cool it.
Also I have had to admit that I don't have the time to get this finished so am getting some help on the project.

Is one lonesome vac motor blowing and cooling in this 5kg setup? Any stirring vanes needed?

It will be breathtaking, I'm quite sure!

I already use one of these on the 400mm cooling bin it should do the trick on the 800mm bin. Not going to bother with stirring vanes. I see the big sivetz roasters don't use stirrers.
http://www.topmaq...d=WWDU1100

On the roaster it's going to take 2 vac blowers to do the job.

5/6 kg roast chamber. I went square this time. I am hopeful that this unit might do 7 kg. Which means if I make one in the future that is 3 times as wide it will around 21kg. The bottom section of this roaster should be finished next week.

Rob

Ok I have attached the photo but it won't show?

The new RC is 200x200 square at the bottom then 200 X 320 at the top. For some reason I can't get the photo to show.
