Freshbeans Air-Roaster
JETROASTER
So, this is the workhorse. 5 lbs. French Roast in 8 minutes.
Lighter roasts can go quicker, but I prefer them at about 7 minutes.
It's not real pretty, but it has been in service for over 8 years.
Black iron pipe(2") , stripped ductwork, (acid bath, abrasive wheel)
The current RC is about 2 weeks from retirement, being replaced by a 7.5-10 lb stainless version. It will remain a pump-n-dump. I will likely re-incorporate a sight-glass again.
I am currently building a smaller machine that will be considerably sleeker, using a different design concept. All stainless.

In the photo;
#1 air from blower
(http://www.ametek...rd_ID=6542)
#2 fuel control, #3 primary combustion air control,#4 ignitor,#5(pre-combustion) air pressure dump,#6 combustion,#7 burner Temp, #8 Lower RC T, #9 contact T,#10 bean T,#11 exhaust T.
Fuel source; 2, twenty lb. LPG, tied together with a regulator, normally running at 35-40 lbs pressure.(this arrangement reduces tank freeze)
Incoming air pressure gets split into primary combustion air, and secondary combustion and dilution air.

Not in the photo;
Just above the exhaust temp it transitions to 3", onward to chaff collector, transition to 4" out of chaff collector, pushes straight up 25' out of building.
....one blower only.

.....Have Fun, Scott

killer.. I need some more heat/blower specs and some more detail info on the black iron air arrangement..Ahhhhh...It reminds me of home.. . :)

Modern art. Thanks for posting, Scott! Do you use a prefabricated burner, or one of your creation?

As art goes, this is probably brutalism. I am shooting for 'mechanical sculpture' with the next machines.
The next machines are coming together alot more refined.
I just started building again when I joined the forum.
Finding time is always the issue.
The burner is created, and is the other issue. It doesn't appear that the industry has not done it.
Maybe they don't care, maybe they don't like or need it. Whatever the case...
The insidious plan is to complete the drawings, file the provisional , recruit roasternauts.
Build multiple machines by multiple roasternauts at the same time...and blog it...right here.
We could have alot of fun, but I certainly don't want the industry taking a free ride.

I am keenly aware that I need medication, but that's my plan anyway. Scott

Oh! How a bout a pic of the chaff collector because I want one in my build.

In 8 years have you figured how much fuel it takes per pound or per batch?

Fuel; 40lbs LPG = 450 lbs coffee (summer)
415 lbs(winter)
Currently refining combustion a bit, and refining bean circulation. I feel squeezing another 25% efficiency is reachable.
Chaff; Nothing artistic there. Inverted waste basket inside
another trash can. 5" water bath.
Setting one building on fire was enough. The water bath is messy but, no more fires!! Scott

JETROASTER
Chaff collector. A special brand of ugly. Inside is an inverted can.
The outer can only holds the water. Secure the inner can downward,
( to fight the exhaust pressure ) ...presto, the chaff is no longer a viable fuel. Hope it's helpful Scott

I don't understand it (chaff collector) but I love it anyway!

Scott,

I'd like to take a stab at how you have this arranged.

The discharge (exhaust) duct from the roaster goes down through the upper end of the inverted smaller bucket and extends down into the water a couple of inches.

The second duct takes the water-filtered exhaust minus chaff from the upper end of the inverted bucket then on to the outdoors?

Sort of like the water pipes from some folks younger rebellious days.

Let me know if I win a prize!

Allen
You are the grand prize winner!!!!....almost...
Exhaust enters off-center, 90 degree turn(inside) to create
cyclonic. Chaff falls into water bath. Exhaust exits on center,
up and out.
Quickly built, effective, shameful in photos.
Scott

Darn! I thought I had scored 100%. Oh well...

They call that "crude but effective" and nothing wrong with that other than sometimes feeling a little self concious when showing the world.

Great design concept!

The inner bucket touches the water? Like this?

Hi Chad
I think we have a winner! ...Inner bucket touches the floor of the outer bucket(small gap). Center pipe is flush with ceiling of inner bucket.
The real flaw is that the large surface area of the water
is being pressed by the exhaust. Holding the inner tank down requires more effort.
By reducing the exposed surface, this could be remedied.

Would it be fee-sable to extend the exhaust pipe into the water to work like a Hookah without the top section

I think it would work but for a commercial roaster when you capture stuff in water EPA calls that a hazardout waste, could get tricky with disposal.

JETROASTER
I'm certain the hookah technology would work...A little more resulting back-pressure maybe.
Even discharging close to the water surface would likely work
as well.
Disposal: Evaporation trough, then goes into the mulch pile as a dry chaff biscuit.

dja
forget the water bath, use a cyclonic seperator with a water spray covering the outlet, you water is always moving them so its constanly washing the wet chaff down the drain, kinda like that commercial you wonder where the yellow went.

large capacity roaster,,,18" dia X maybe 48 tall

JETROASTER
Sometimes I think I'd be wiser to build a nicer seperator that empties easy.
I am sooo over the water. But the fire protection is nice. It's ugly ,but it works, So that project keeps winding up lower on the list.
I'm really more interested in building a nice 1lb roaster.
Let's face it, roasters are more fun than chaff collectors.

Although painfully slow, I've been making a new RC for the 5lb machine ....Using a little mixing bowl technology. I put Max in the frame for scale.
The question ; If I reshape the flame and force the tip up into the RC, would that likely create any of the characteristics of a direct -flame roaster?

There are some obvious hazards involved....but just thinking out loud. -Scott

A little video before the rebuild. Some of these components are going away soon, in favor of things more functional or simply more attractive.
The combustion liner will be changed in an effort to spread out the center of the flame. The casing will get changed out....because it's ugly... and the RC because it's extremely ugly.
It will also become a bit larger....I've got plenty of heat.
I can't afford any down-time for this machine, so once I have my parts, it will get taken apart and redone quickly. I will shoot video of that, David (dja) has an interest in taking a stab at it. For now, this is all I've got.

A little something to hold Davids interest. "pilot light" hmph! -Scott

Put me in the interested list on seeing the combustion chamber casing re-do. This is a one-of-a-kind burner setup that I will also want to take a stab at down the road when I try my hand at building a bubblebed.
