I agree, great looking roaster, compact and high function.

I remember reading a while back where you had some issues with premature failure of a finned tubular element and you went with the coiled nichrome. Has this proven to be a good choice?

I'm assuming you get much faster thermal response with the nichrome.

Also, what are you using for a drive? Photos?

It's been roasting for about 4 years now and is a great machine.

The coiled nichrome is working much better, and response times are about the same as gas. The exposed nichrome eventually oxidizes and fails, but it lasts a long time and the coils are inexpensive.

The drum is direct driven by a compact gearmotor on the back, and supported by the front nose bearing. The drum and motor go along for the ride when it is tipped. I'll try to get some updated photos up.

It now has a Fuji PXR3 PID installed, see the bottom photo.

When you post the drive side photos I'd be interested to know what wattage you've got under the hood, typical batch size and optimum roast curve for this machine.

Looks like you kept the drive nice and simple with few parts to fail.

I'm curious about the connection to the gearmotor shaft. Is the part connecting to the gearmotor shaft a bored out end of the drum shaft? Also, is it locked to the gearmotor shaft via set screw?

The gearmotor shaft is about 1/4" in diameter. There is a short 1/2" diameter shaft that is drill out to accept the motor shaft. About half of it extends outside the roaster in the picture above, and yes, there is a set screw in there somewhere. The shaft goes inside to where it is welded to a small round flange. The flange is bolted to the end of the drum. If I ever dismantle the drive I'll take more pictures, but the mechanics are very simple and there are probably other ways to accomplish it. I had that gearmotor so made do with it. It is heavier duty than many of these type gearmotors. It has done dozens of roasts for about four years with this setup and it is still running great.

Just a note to let people know this machine is still going strong. It is over 100 roasts. It has not needed any repairs, and the only maintenance item is replacing the nichrome element every three years or so.

1 pound electric sample roaster, 3 pound direct-flame roaster, both handmade; modified Mazzer Mini grinder, LaSpaziale Vivaldi II automatic espresso machine. When the electricity goes out I make vacpot coffee from beans ground on my Zassenhaus hand grinder, and heat the water with a teakettle on the gas range.
