Minni KKTO
Coffee makes the world goround
Hi i am new here , im from Denmark , so English is not my first language , but i hope it does well enough

i have roasted with a popper , that was later modded

Then i did see a SCTO and thought ,nice ,,but one could do better

then i did see the KKTO
again nice , but was not sure that ,that was what i wanted

I would like something in the 250 gram area and smaller size

Then i did see a minni turbo Owen on ebay , and bought it

Well then i had to build a minni KKTO

but i wanted it to be even simpler

so here is parts of my build

I had a inner pot made of stainless , it was thin walled ca, 0,8 mm

no way you could make a counter sunk hole for a countersunk screw

or could one :)

I made this tool
its just some scrap metal with a counter sunk hole , calculated to make the bulge i wanted to made fit the screw

a amboss with a hole in it + a screw to hammer into the hole

Then you put in the screw through the inner pot and through the tool and into the amboss

hammer it until the countersunk has formed

Without the screw that was used as a tool

This is the inner pot in the outer pot
what you can not see is the small spacers i made
they are just some 16 mm stainless roundbar
drilled 6mm and countersunk
this makes a gap under the inner pot of 14 mm

In one KK posts you see him explain that the hot air will go down the sides of the inner pot
and then up through the beens via the perforated bottom

nice theory , i totaly did agree
i did just wonder that he then did use a inner pot with perforated sides ??

no way the air would go up through the beens ,if it could take the easier way through the sides ??

so i thought ,,mine will have solid sides , i can always later perforate them if needed

in this photo the bottom is still not drilled

Coffee makes the world goround
So i had to make a bushing for the axle
its just brass
then the center hole that i in the start had at 6mm to align things
was opened up to fit the bushing

Hey i did fit

Keep it simple

inside ,,nit even countersunk , not needed

Well sins i did not want ti make this a hand turned one , i had to fit a windscreen wiper motor , it from BMW ,only turns 30 pr minute

I made this bracket , its just flat iron
clamped to a steel plate and tack welded let to cool (still clamped )and ground the welds down
turned around clamp again and full weld ,grind down welds . let coll
turn around again clamp again and full weld , grind , let coll
this way you wont get any warping

So the screws goes through the inner pot spacers and the outer pot

the nuts holding it together , is in this picture replaced by the legs
they are just some 16 mm stainless round bar drilled and tapped M6 in both ends

then at the bracket some hex M6 bolts are holding the bracket

fiddling with the motor

Coffee makes the world goround
In the last photo you can se the last part of the leg
its again the same 16 mm stainless round bar

this time drilled 6 mm at one end
and almost through 12 from the other end

this makes it possible the put the hex screw into the leg and holding everything together

Lots of drilling in the inner pot
DONT make them that big
it gave me problems with the stirrer
the holes did catch the beens , and sins the pot is so thin , it bend and that was not so good

i had to make the stirrer so that it was a whole been hight above the bottom of the inner pot (a been could pas under the stirrer)
it didnt seem so good , but i get nice even roasts anyway

Coffee makes the world goround
this is a photo from AFTER my firsts test runs

the theory about the air going under and up through the beens ,, didnt work

, so i did put a ""few" slits into the pot

i wonder how some have problems with chaff in there beens ,,i newer have any ,,wonder why ;)

Coffee makes the world goround
so how does it look

here it is on top of my stow , and under my exhaust fan

on low it makes almost no noise (the fan ) good for hearing first crack

Here is a roast i did

i really think it is best to separate the heater ,and use a dimmer/triak

at the end of the roast , just when you need it most , you loose the control

the beens are heated by air , but also by radiation

at the end you have very little radiation , because the oven is hot , and the element dont cycle so much

have any done this

this roast was done by preheating to 150 on the dial , but the air was 200
then doumb the beens
by 140 been temp minutes i set the heat to 225
and just before 1C at 187 i set it a bit lower

and that the problem, then the element stays of for to long

I think there is a BIG difference in how to roast with this beast , compared to the popper

so any have experience with both

i roast lots of different beens

I have many times heard 5 min to dry 150 c
3 min to 1c
and then 3,5 to 4,5 for drip 4,5 to 5 for espresso

but its hard to make this beast go fast from 150

it senses the air temp ,not the beens

i have seen the tube mod
but that would actually make the element cycle lees (stable air temp =no need for the element to be on)

have any tried the opposite making the gap bigger
then the element has to work harder to hold/get the air temp up

the air temp is high enough , only the air can not heat the been s fast enough

but the radiation could

This Is a Malawi Pamwamba African been

again 150 on the dial (air 200)
then at 2 minutes bump to 225
at 185 30sec before 1c set to 213

again the heater plays tricks

as the temp inside rises the cycling rate drops

i want it to be constant just like you could keep the gas flame on constant
