Coffee should be processing in Virginia today, for delivery either Saturday or Monday.. Here's a pic from Guatemala of 60lbs of New Oriente ready to ship. The final choice was ORIGIN. GUATEMALA REGION. NEW ORIENTE MICROREGION: MATAQUESCUINTLA It was the highest scoring coffee @ 91 sean

Sean, Thanks for the leg-work! This will get added to my collection of beans destined for the MH-1. Being able to do #1 loads (instead of #5) will be nice. Any cupping yet? Thanks again, Scott Edited by JETROASTER on 03/19/2011 10:03 AM |

Sean was kind enough to offer a sample of each of the three coffees he just received. I agreed to roast and taste. Here are the roasting notes, as interesting as they can be from a Gene Cafe. Coffee: Guatemala San Marcos Tajumulco La Igualdad Crop: 2011 Grade: SHB Appearance: Very nice looking uniform lot, a few peaberries. Roast date: 3/27/11 Ambient temperature: 67F Weight: 227 grams Preheat: 400F Set:471F Yellow: 6:45 1st crack: 11:32 Temp Drop: 12:00 EOR: 14:15 End weight: 194 grams Degree of roast: City Plus Roast notes - nice steady first, bit of chaff remaining in the crease, Munch: Bright with deep chocolate or something I cannot identify Coffee: Guatemala Fraijanes Palencia San Jorge Crop: 2011 Grade: SHB Appearance: Very clean, even, peaberries Roast date: 3/27/11 Ambient temperature: 67F Weight: 227 grams Preheat: 400F Set:471F Yellow: 6:40 1st crack: 11:55 Drop: 12:25 EOR: 14:25 End weight: 195 grams Degree of roast: City Plus Roast notes - nice rolling first, Slight chaff remaining in the crease, Munch: Sweet!! Roasted nuts - I'm looking forward to this one in the cup! Coffee: Guatemala Oriente Mataquescuintla Crop: 2011 Grade: SHB Appearance: Excellent, clean, uniform, peaberries Roast date: 2/27/11 Ambient temperature: 67F Weight: 227 grams Preheat: 400F Set:471F Yellow: 6:25 1st crack: 11:21 Drop: 11:21 EOR: 13:51 End weight: 195 grams Degree of roast: City Plus Roast notes - Slow unsteady first crack, Chaff remaining in the crease, Munch: Hard bean, very pleasant bitter chocolate Next morning jar huff: All of them are doing very nicely resting quietly in their jars and each has a wonderful fragrance. The nose tells me San Jorge is the one to look forward to. I'll brew each of them on Wednesday (day three) and offer thoughts, again on Friday and once more on Sunday. Then I'll start all over next Sunday and roast each one to just the lightest kiss of Second crack and drop back in here. Thanks, Sean! Respect the bean.

First tasting of the three roasts: Coffee: Guatemala San Marcos Tajumulco La Igualdad Nice fragrance - sweet and bright, a little citrusy Light to medium body Nutty Sweet No specific flavors at the moment Coffee: Guatemala Fraijanes Palencia San Jorge Bright fragrance, full Nice body, not big Bright and somewhat acidic Sweet with floral notes Coffee: Guatemala Oriente Mataquescuintla Nice rich fragrance Medium to heavy body (already!) Deep notes, dark dried fruits Not acidic at all Sweet richness, heavy flavors Of the three, the Oriente stands up to the same light roast best of all three. I'm very excited to try it again on Friday. The first two may develop with more rest, but at the moment, the Oriente is the City Plus standout. John Respect the bean.

Because of shipping costs on such a small order I ended up getting less then I had hoped to..BUT!!!!! There is plenty more and hope to be able arrange a larger buy later this spring after the harvest is complete.. Sean Sean Harrington

Ah... The DP Oriente of yore! I still have 3 or 4 batches of that. Vac sealed and awaiting its time in the roaster. No, this is wet processed, but by initial tastes, an outstanding coffee as well as the DP. Not the same, but a very, very good coffee. I'll share a 5 day rest tasting tomorrow. John Respect the bean.

John Well lets hope that this means we will see a DP as well ! Any other info about the 'oriente' farm? Was this stuff auction lot and all gone or will it likely be seen at various outlets? |
