Thermocouple mod for FreshRoast SR-500

I wanted to share my thermocouple mod for my FreshRoast SR-500. I've read of people using fiberglass insulated TCs, but being a bit paranoid about food safety I decided to go for a stainless-steel sheathed probe from Omega.

Why I'm paranoid: the documentation on Omega's fiberglass TCs (http://www.omega...._guide.pdf) mentions a binder coating which "improves moisture and abrasion resistance but is destroyed above 400deg F", I don't want stuff like that near my coffee. The fiberglass probe I got with my cheap TC reader didn't have any documentation.

I found the 12" probe to work really well, I bent it so that it'd snake through the chaff collector down into the roasting chamber. It's secured to the chaff collector with a little aluminum foil. The hole through the chaff collector was filed with a woodworking rasp (I've heard the FreshRoast's plastic can be brittle so I didn't want to drill).

If I had to do it again, I might try a larger diameter probe (1/8" instead of 1/16"). The 1/16" was really easy to work with though, and the movement of the beans doesn't seem to disturb it.

Feedback welcome! It was a fun little project and works great so far.

Does anyone have any suggestions for better ways to affix the probe to the plastic chaff collector? I'm using aluminum foil which works well and is easy to modify. But I was wondering if this might cause galvanic corrosion (http://en.wikiped..._corrosion) due to the contact of stainless steel & aluminum -- I'll definitely keep a lookout for it. I can't think of anything else that'd withstand the heat.

Well my original sensor failed so I purchased the above recommended thermocouple and took your advice and bought the 1/8" probe. Instead of bending the probe like you did I went ahead and drilled a 1/8" hole in the top of the roaster and just push it straight down. I use a clothes pin to hold it in place (adjustable mod!! :) ).

When I first started using it the temperatures seemed low, so I double checked it by putting the probe in boiling water and it read exactly 212 degrees, right on. That meant that either I am using a different position in the roasting chamber or the previous sensor read high. It was hard to place the original sensor anyway as it was just a flexible piece of wire with the thermocouple at the very end.

I like this rigid probe much better than the flexible sensor that came with the meter. Ironically I paid much more for the probe than I did for the meter and sensor combined originally.

Okay I'm confused (happens quite often actually) I have an SR500 Freshroast and am new to this roasting thing. Am I to understand that you first used a flexible digital sensor which burnt out and then switched to a rigid sensor ? Do you have a link as to where I might purchase one?

Not sure about the flexible thermocouple sensor failing but here's a link to Omega and the sheathed sensor mentioned at the top.

I'm guessing the 1/16" dia sheath will respond a little faster than the 1/8" due to less thermal mass.
