Thanks for the addition to the group. Seriously considering building a drum roaster along the lines of oldgrumpus's. Love the design and craftsmanship.

Heat Sealing
6eight
I was curious if anyone has a low cost option for heat sealing coffee pouches. The bags I ordered are three layers (Paper/ AL/ LLDPE). I am not going to be sealing alot and don't want to invest $300-400 (at least not yet).

I have read the Impulse sealers don't work very well. In another post I was reading online a guy was using a simple flat Iron and said it worked perfectly.

Thanks in advance!

JETROASTER
Mine is about 10 years old. ..lotsa miles. I've changed the element 3-4 times....still kickin'. I placed a small piece of wire across the fiberglass tape... it creates a sort of pressure release gap in the seal.

I guess I don't understand the "release gap" logic. Do you place it long ways so the void runs the length of the seal? If you don't do this what are the implications? I can pick up an 8" impulse for around $50 so if it works that is great.

I set it up so it creates a 1/8" void in the seal....just enough to release degassing pressure. Fresh roasted will pop those pouches in about 2 days without the relief.

What about if they have a one-way valve?

My 2-3oz flat pouches have no valve....but you're right, on the 16oz stand-up pouch, I order the ones w/ the valve so there would be no need.
What are you roasting lately? -Scott

Well I have been very fortunate. I have been hanging out with a local roaster. They have a 20# Primo roaster and a smaller 6# version. I have only observed so far, but they are going to let me take the 6# for a test run. They are also willing to sell me green. I just got some Tanzania AAA (beautiful stuff) and some PNG. I also have some Monsooned Malabar I just roasted that I love blended for espresso.

The shop is about ready to get a 50#er so I can't wait to see that one in action. It will be a while as they were telling me it is quite a long process to order a roaster.

Both great sealers. For my taste the Hot Jaw gives a wider seal.

I believe you can also get a foot crank for it; ask Eddie Dove.

You really cannot go wrong with either of the instruments.

I use mine with both one way valve and no valve on 2/4 oz bags.
