Motor shaft heat issues

Hello, I was wondering about how other turbo designs deal with the heat that gets transfered from the roasting chamber to the motor via the shaft. I have installed a heavy motor (AC Continuous duty with gearbox 16 rpm) that I think it was meant to be a rotisserie motor. It works very well but I do notice the motor shaft getting hot. The gearbox is not hot to touch. There is no mechanical binding of the shaft anywhere that I can see. I use a 1/4 inch square steel (keyway) shaft and 1/4 inch sockets to connect. I have the motor mounted in a heavy gauge aluminum chassis which should dissipate some heat. My thinking is that the motor should be able to take it since it was designed to be a rotisserie motor. There is a second motor shaft on the bottom (1/4 inch dia) that is meant to have a small fan blade mounted if necessary. I don't think it is really a problem. These little synchronous gearmotors get hot. Not the gearbox, but the motor itself, hence the little fan on some of them. Adding heat on both sides of the gearbox will reduce its life, but by how much I don't know. Mine has been going well for four years. I do oil the shafts on the gearbox and motor occasionally. I added a heat slinger of sorts between the drum and the gearbox. On the drum coupler I turned a small fin. And, I drilled a cross hole on the coupler, too, to help dissapate heat. I use 3 inter related methods 1] Insulation shield between the roast chamber to the motor housing and minimal contact between the metal parts 2] Length of the shaft as a heat sink 3] A small contact point or coupling of the shaft to the motor KK I home roast and I like it. Designer of the KKTO

Dan and KK: Thanks for the information. I will see how it goes and check the motor/gearbox now and then. I did find a small fan blade with a 1/4 inch mount that I will add just in case. |

My roaster section is separate to the motor section as in separate component modules So the motor is not directly bolted to the hot part of the roaster It keeps the motor cool to the touch and well within its limits KK I home roast and I like it. Designer of the KKTO

other then being a little on the slow side I wouldn't knock that motor in a stir crazy to much you really have to give it credit for what it is. The one in my roaster has been in there for over 5 years of spinning beans in all kinds of weather and all of the side trips into the world of home roasting coffee that I have put it through. And yep its still spinning beans and doing its little reversing act that it does. And the one that I had before this one is still alive and well in Tulsa where it has taken up residance with my brother roasting coffee for him. They should make them so that the turn about 10 rpm faster. DJA I pour Iron and roast Coffee Beans

The new motor runs at 16 rpm. faster than the original 10 rpm motor. Lots of power too. I had to keep reducing the bean load with the old motor to 300g to get it to stop reversing back and forth making "angel wings". Now I can easily do 1 pound which meets my needs. |
