Bread machine and heatgun combo
gene
Hey: My first ever heat gun post. Today I read a thread by Jim Schulman the guy that I admire in the coffee tasting field. He does tons of cupping and I hang on his every word.
I have a Gene Cafe but if there is a better way to roast I'm all ears.
Jim contends a bread machine and heatgun combo comes close to commercial roasters in results. I'm talking asbout compared to any other roaster out there. This is deep.

I want to hear from homeroasters on the subject. How would this work? Where would you advise me to get started?
HAVE TO RESEARCH ANYONE THAT IS OR HAS DONE THIS.

Wish we had a separate category. Darn it!

Thanks in advance for any tidbits.

If it were me wanting to investigate the taste profile Jim is referring to I would look into Koffee Kosmo's KKTO and Farmroasts' Dreamroast roasters. These roasters can produce coffee as good or better than some of the best I've cupped from commercial drum roasters.

might want to check out the Bread Machine Roaster forum -

http://forum.home...rum_id=140

Lot's of good stuff in there.

FWIW - I think the HG/BM combo applies heat in a very similar fashion to the Gene. I suspect the HG/BM has more power and is a more agile when changing roast speed. A bean mass temp. probe can be added to a HG/BM easily too which is helpful.

Gene,

Some of the guys here participated in Jim S., roasting contests the past couple of years, and at least one of them (Sherman I think) did pretty well, and used a heat-gun breadmachine setup. Kupe also used the HGBM I think.

Home roasting has come a long way
Especially with bigger roasts

This is a true but a little known fact
Both the HG/BM and the KKTO were invented in Queensland Australia

The HG/BM was invented by a young lady known as Correto

The KKTO Hybrid Turbo Oven Roaster was developed by me

Oh, yeah! Well I invented, designed, and fabricated the SBR, single-bean roaster in Indiana. So there!

And a lovely roaster it is young Dan
They say it takes 43 beans to make a 7 gram cup
How long does that take to roast ?

Not long at all, if you have NetFlix on cable!

PS: I only pull double shots.

Now I'm torn between Dan's wonderful invention and some type of combo.
My son is on leave from the Pentagon for 10 days. Like me he got quite a chuckle this AM. Ha
You folks have left me with lots of fantastic reading. I feel like a kid in a candy store.
Bill-still have the Hamilton Beach you gave me years ago. Use it sometimes at our office. Its a curiosity. I have been trying to describe you to my son. Help me out!

KK is going to be hard to beat sounds like. Need some of his testimonials and experiences. Maybe he'll private message me.
Thanks all!

The HG/BM is a capable and simple to build DIY roaster.
The bread machine being used has an interesting history. It started in late '05 by peterz on the old SM Home Digest and also here. This is an early thread KG roaster I picked up on Peter's concept and connected with him to start a build myself and work out some issues Peter was having.
At the time the SC/TO was the DIY home roaster craze. It added a larger batch size to the earlier poppers. One of the problems with home roasters was adequate agitation to get even roasts and good heat transfer. With a popper you needed the right batch size for good churning or a wooden spoon to assist until the bean batch lightened up on weight. The Stir Crazy stirred too slow and would often bind up.
Peter tried the BM with an extended shaft off the drive to a pot and stir arms. Similar to the pic below of the shaft in my YankeePotRoaster. At the time a heat gun and using the bread chamber for the beans was considered but with the availability of the Galloping Gourmet turbo oven in the US, the added size of a pot for the roast chamber and the larger area of heat application was just to tempting even though it was going to be a more difficult build.
In the spring of '06 Belinda on CS went with the more simple build of the HG/BM which became the "Correto"(Belinda's user name on CS).
I then replaced the BM on my YPR with a more beefy drive that became my DreamRoast.
KK then improved on the Stir Crazy slower speed stirring concept and the heat flow problems of the SC with a more beefy motor better arms and the dbl. pot.
The key to these better roasters is improved agitation, whether it be moderate speed stirring on the KKTO or higher speed churning/whirling with the HG/BM or DreamRoast.. This improves evenness of heat application and evenness of the final roast. The rest is just controlling temps.

Heatgun + Breadmaker may not roast better than your GeneCafe, but it can roast upwards of 2 pounds per batch. Very versatile roaster especially if you have variable heat control. It excels at $$ per pound roasting. With larger batches the first (drying) phase is sometimes extended too long lending a 'black tea' type of overtone, and tipping (slightly burned bean ends) can show up if you're not careful.
