Hi Everyone My name is Heinrich and I am from South Africa. I have been reading and re-reading posts all over the forum and I must say there are some superb people here. Your dedication to coffee roasting and helping each other is admirable. Due to the cost and limited supply of roasters available in South Africa I decided to go the route of building one. I have decided on the KKTO-type one as it seems to be one within my capability that will give the best roast. My goal for this thread is to document the whole process (which might help someone else) and to seek intensive assistance and guidance from you guys (and gals if there are any). I have very limited knowledge of electronics and can weld mild steel end do woodworking. I already bought the TO (http://www.makro....e.co.za%2F) and have to go shop for the pots etc. After reading a lot about the KKTO roaster I found that some people have problems with the thermostat not kicking in quick enough and that BT decreases. My plan is to eventually go the route of farmroast and some other guys to link the heating element directly to a variac, but deinitely not at first. My first goal will be to get to temperature probes in, one for BT and one for ET and take it from there. I am also thinking of using the KKTO roaster with a false bottom instead of the pasta pot model, but will see what is available in terms of pots. Some things that I find difficult to source are high heat silicon tubing and high temp silicone. I will still phone around before giving up on the tubing, but was also thinking of using pressure cooker gasket. Does one get high temp silicone at automotive stores? Haven't tried there yet. I am looking forward to this build and speaking to everyone! Heinrich Edited by farimir on 08/15/2011 1:55 AM |

Hi and welcome Heinrich I got your email In South Africa you should try a car parts place for high temp silicone as they would be the best candidates for such things or you can always contact me and we can supply Hi Temp hose to your length and silicone or any other part you need for your build Which ever Turbo Oven roaster style you decide on The farmroast style uses a 1) A single pot and 2) Two heat sources one is under the pot and is a cut down electric fry pan 3) external chaff catcher The KKTO style uses 1) 240mm off the shelf pasta pot set 2) Volume / insulation insert The motor base can be made from timber Either way the heart of both systems is, correct volume, and good agitation KK I home roast and I like it. KK Thank you for your reply and willingness to help, I appreciate it very much. I definitely want to go with your style of KKTO, but I am looking to use your first design, the one before the pasta pot. I am still investigating the pots and it seems I might have found one that will fit the TO quite good. There are a 2 companies so far that do sell something similar to your silicone hoses, but when I have more info I will post here, do not now if it will work yet. The main roasting pot that I am looking at at the moment 11.5cm deep and 31.5cm wide. This feels right to me as I would not have to use a false bottom, but it might be too shallow? The bean roasting chamber in the photo is an aluminium baking tin. One in the first to pictures are 7.5cm deep and 20cm wide. It doesn't seem wide enough to me so I tried the next size which is 7.5cm deep and 23.5cm wide (picture 3). This looks ok to me, but I am worried about the thin metal the tin is made of. I did look at strainers etc, but they all are tapered too much, which makes that middle flat portion small, or they are too round. The other option would be to use an aluminium pot which would have thicker and more sturdy. Any comments would be appreciated. Haven't purchased anything yet, just snapped some photos in the shop. Just follow the measurements that I have noted You can go smaller in volume but not larger with your false floor KK I home roast and I like it. Designer of the KKTO

KK I think we live too far south, lol. Was looking at that, but not available here. Question on the silicon tubing. I can get it here locally but only rated to 200 degrees, but it seems to be the same stuff you are using. Any thoughts? H |

H My hose is rated a little higher but is a min of 200 C As for the one you have available I believe that for the short period its on around 220 - 250C it should be OK for the job KK I home roast and I like it.
