Wood Gasifier
coffeeroastersclub
A while ago I made mention of a wood gasification project I have been doing. It came to fruition this past week and I have a video of it in operation.

As an FYI, wood gasification is the process of rapidly turning organic material into burnable gas. This gas can be used in burners for stove projects, or for generators to produce electricity. My project will be applied to both those applications. In the video you will see the gas produced by the gasifier being burned in a swirl burner. The video shows the startup of the generator ending with the lighting of the swirl burner. The video is about 1/2 hour long:

Note that the project was done at night so that I could take a good picture of the gas burning. Please forgive the shaky and sometimes fuzzy video. Its shaky because I am pointing it all over the place, and the fuzziness sometimes occurs because of the darkness outside (autofocus issues). However it is pretty informative.

P.S. Contains one swear word (starts with "s" and ends with "t".) Often heard in workshops where guys work on projects ...

Hope no one is offended.

That's one hell of a wood gasifier
Took a few times to get it lit but I was convinced when you hit 1000 deg and then 1019 deg
With a lovely swirl

A bit hot for coffee roasting Grin

I have a fairly big perforated drum I made years ago for a project that never got off the ground and am thinking of using it as an open air roaster. I may put the drum over that swirl burner and fashion a rotisserie to it. It would not be an enclosed roaster. I have never done open air roasting so I have no idea what to expect.

My only concern really is what, if any, deposits the syngas would leave on the beans. I have read that syngas from these wood gasifiers is composed of methane, hydrogen, ethane, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen; along with water vapor. However since I am using shredded cardboard as the main organic material used for the gasification I wonder if some toxic elements may be in that gas also (even after ignition). Maybe I'll just use wood chips for the experiment.

If I get the drum setup over the swirl burner I'll take a movie of it and post here.

I am familiar with the rocket stove. I have a basic one that I use in the winter when I am roasting outdoors in my BBQ grill. Instead of the typical side port for the fuel I have the port on the top where you can put long sticks in, junk 1x2's, etc. Gets red hot. I got my idea from this guys stove:

Nothing pretty, but it sure works well.

On untas thread that they use that gasifier fueled with waste coffee on that car in Britain
They are attempting a land speed record

I say bring back steam power fueled with a gasifier

I say heat up water for power turbines for electricity generation with a gasifier

A mechanic from work is building one of these. I would have bet him anything it would not work but he had a 12 hp lawnmower running for 1/2 hour. He uses sawdust for his fuel. He still has some bugs, needs a cyclone and a gas cooler. I see it running and think BS. but it runs.

FEMA actually has plans on how to attach one to tractors so that farmers can still tend to food production in case of a national emergency.

The germans used them on cars extensively during WWII to save petroleum for their war efforts.

I was thinking what a novel idea it would be to hook one up to a generator to produce electricity to recharge the batteries in an electric car. Fill up the gasifier reactor with wood chips and other paper junk, start it up to produce the syngas needed to start the electric generator then plug the car into the generator and let her charge for about 4 hours. There are actually a few plans available to turn some cars into electric.

I put up a new video of my gasification project. I have made some interesting improvements to the gasifier which has enhanced the production of syngas. Plus the swirl burner I have is producing some real good blue flames. No swearing in this video. I go into some more detail on the operation of the unit also.

Here is the youtube link:
