Tracked threads being lost
Bhante
Hello,

I have trouble tracking threads for some reason. For a while it works, then after a while (a very small number of weeks) all tracked threads get wiped out, i.e. no longer tracked. Does anybody have any experience of such a problem or know what the cause might be? Is there some setting somewhere limiting how long a thread can remain set as tracked? I have a suspicion that all my tracked threads get wiped out in one go - regardless of which ones were set as tracked first and which later.

Another question - is there a global setting possible to set "Notify me when a reply is posted" by default when posting a message?

Many thanks to all the administrators and contributors for this great forum!

To the above, you must select, IN EACH THREAD at the bottom of the post screen, if you wish to be notified.

As to your tracking issue, I need a bit more information.

thanks,

What in particular? (Sorry if it was not clear!)

Hi,

I am sure you were clear but my imagination gets away with me. The picture of threads putting on their running shoes and skipping off the pages simply had me Roflmao

that said, if you are following (aka your word tracking) a thread and the threads somehow are gone then you, my friend, have a computer problem.

it could be that after you have "come back" after a few weeks a page or two has been added to a particular thread and you simply are on the wrong page. at the top of each thread page, there are numbers which indicate what page you are on. look see if that helps at all. if not let me know.

as far as I know none of the threads have skipped away. now if you have not been here for quite some time we have actually setup a better way to handle each forum so look around for what you are interested in; you cn see ALL DISCUSSION FORUMS by looking under Discussion Forum at top left.

let me know,

g

also at left under Navigation you can scroll to search and type in whatever you are looking for...

Do you mean you're losing the tracking feature?

I'm pretty sure the threads aren't going anywhere, but the tracking feature may be switching off for some reason.

Yes John, that is exactly what I meant. What happens is something like this: let's say at various dates in January-February I switch on tracking for threads a, b, c, d and e; for a while the tracking works, and I get notifications of all new postings (which I meticulously click on and make sure that they don't stop through not opening the page). Then one day (let's say in March) all goes quiet and I get no notifications for any of the threads at all. After a while I open one of the threads and see there have been a whole batch of new postings that I did not know about, and I see that I am no longer subscribed to this thread. Then I search for other threads I was subscribed to, and I find ALL of them are now unsubscribed. I re-subscribe to all of the ones I am interested in, and for a while I receive notifications, then exactly the same thing happens again. I resubscribe again, and a few months later it all repeats all over again. This must have happened about 4 or 5 times now! It's all rather mystifying.

OK, please understand that I am not trying to be egregious about your issue.

I believe your problem is a POST v. THREAD issue and your understanding of how the system works. Many forums allow you to track an entire thread; our system let's you track action on your post within a thread.

If you want to follow a thread you need to look often to see what others are saying.

When you ask for notification of your post in a thread that is what you get but there is much more going on other then your post. You will not be able to SEE all of what is happening until you actually login and look at the thread. You cannot subscribe to an entire thread only your participation in that thread.

There are always new postings in an active thread that you will not see unless you login and actually look at the thread. You only get a notice about your specific post within that thread.

Unless you login and actively use the thread you do miss, at times, many more postings.

Again I believe we are talking semantics here:

post v. thread

tracking v. notification

subscribe v. post notification

I will setup a test thread to see if we can solve your problem. I will send you a PM as soon as I setup a thread and I would like you to participate in that/this thread to see what happens.

thanks for your participation in the forums; I am sure we can solve your problem.

regards,

Ginny, am I missing something? At the top of this thread there's a hyperlink that says "Track this thread". I click it and it switches to "Stop tracking this thread."

That's what I've always used and whenever someone posts to that thread, I get an email saying someone has posted to that thread. I think that's our friend is talking about.

And yes, it seems the tracking does indeed expire after a certain amount of time, but I don't know why.

That's exactly as I see it also. When I said I have re-subscribed to threads above, I meant exactly as John described - I clicked on "Track this thread" at the top of each of the threads I was interested in. It had nothing to do with specific posts. You can click on "Track this thread" without even posting any message to the thread in question.

Thanks

OK again,

let me go look because perhaps something in the upgrades, very small, has changed this and to be honest I never knew that was there?

I never track threads since I am here all of the time.

So much for forum guru's...

bite me, who knew?

let me go look and see what up.

the code must contain the number of days, weeks etc for expiration, since I did not even know that link was there I will look at the code until tomorrow. been up since 2 am and am a bit tired.

later,

we will fix it,

Hi Back guys:

I know what it says, thank you. My point back is that I always associated it with
"post notification" only. basically it says the same thing.

I totally forgot that we had the thread notification on the top right.
Some if the items I simply forget.

That is why I asked for more information; no one reminded me we had a link at the top, hence my confusion when I read the initial email about a tracking issue.

All I though about was post tracking. I will look into the issue today. Sorry I could not yesterday but it got too late for me to think enough to look at 1000 pages of code.

thanks fo the notes,

love ya all,

Things have been a bit too quiet lately with no emails from homeroasters.org ... time to check for lost tracking. Checking the dates of new replys to threads I know I was tracking, I see that sometime between 5th December and 7th December all the threads I was tracking are no longer tracked (i.e. "lost" in the sense of my original post). It seems that all the tracks were lost at the same time. I also note that by today I was logged off (but I don't know since when) - could that have anything to do with it? How long can I remain logged on for, and is the time measured from the last time I connected or from the last time I manually entered my password? With most fora, [fora or forae??] the tracking is completely independent of being logged on or not and I expect that is also true here, but I mention it just in case.

I also notice that the "Track this thread" link has unfortunately disappeared from the top of the page, and the corresponding checkbox has disappeared from the post reply window also - I expect that has something to do with your tests?

Bhante

Hi,

I am testing this now. One question you asked was how long you can stay logged on, As long as your isp let's you without activity. There is no set time for your session to expire.

will address other questions when I finish seeing what's up.

Hi:

The tracking is fixed. You will see and be able to track from now on.

You can track any thread without logging in by simply looking at the activity of a particular thread. You will however NOT be notified unless you are logged on and check the box for notification at the top for that thread.

You will get a notice if you have asked to track a thread.

You can click the Notify me when a reply is posted
box at the bottom of your post to be notified of reply.

You will be notified of the reply.

The posts you wanted to track are there you were not notified because there was an error.

Please let me know if I missed anything.

Have a great evening.

All working fine now.

I started tracking this thread at the beginning and received no notice of the last few posts.

Something is indeed out of whack.

John:

The track box was turned off. No one got any thread notices from any thread at all.

Fixed it the other day after Bhante mentioned it again. I have tested several forums since and I have received a notice from each that I checked.
So, for now it looks good.

You would have missed the ones while the tracking button was unchecked.

Let me know if you still have a problem

Ah, okay. It was working when this thread started because, I too, am following to see if it ends.

Hi John,

yes you are correct that the thread tracking was workig when this thread actually started. I turned it off and on again, tested different threads in separate forums to see if it was, in fact, a system issue.

I may have forgotten to turn it back on; it is on now and is working fine and actually always was working.

There are many forum systems and some members get so used to one they have been using for ages they expect all forums to act the same way.

However that is not the case. We will have a few more options as I update a few more versions that, while not critical, may give us more options to allow members a universal notice. Frankly I think that a universal is crazy. I would not want a copious amount of emails from any form all day.

Thanks for your speedy input.

love ya,

ginnyGrin
