Discoverying Coffee's Unique Health Benefits
Dan
That's the title of the cover article in the current issue of Life Extension magazine (January 2012). The twelve-page article comes complete with a long list of references and is online, too (see link below). The information covered is too long to present here, so go buy a copy. I got mine at the local health food store.

The major benefits listed were:

1. Greatest source of antioxidants in the American diet.
2. Shown to reduce risk in a number of chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's.
3. Drinking 1 cup of coffee reduces diabetes risk by 13%, 4 cups is 47%, 12 cups 67%!
4. Drinking 4 cups reduced prostate cancer risk 18%, and severe prostate cancer by 40%.
5. Drinking 1-3 cups reduced heart disease by 24%.
6. Drinking 5 cups a day reversed Alzheimer's damage in 5 weeks.
7. Drinking 1-4 cups daily decreased Parkinson's risk by 47%
8. Lowers risk of kidney stones by 10%
9. Four cups a day lowered risk of depression 20% in women.
10. Prevents constipation. ;)
11. Despite the myth, coffee contributes to the body's water requirements.

Most of these benefits have nothing to do with caffeine. Of the thousands of chemicals in coffee, the major player seems to be chlorogenic acid, which is in regular and decaf coffee.

Very cool stuff. Also opens up a whole new world of justification when upgradeitis hits. That new piece of coffee gear is WAY cheaper than a stay at the hospital Grin

So who's going to be the first to do a "polyphenol-retaining roast"?
