Turbo/convection Oven brands and wattage
cruisaire
I'm looking around for a used unit and am starting to think new might be better/stronger. Is a minimum of 1400 watts required? Is halogen better than other types?

You will find most are in the range of
1200W to 1400W

The smaller wattage will work but will also roast a smaller amount
Please note that the correct roast chamber volume should strictly be adhered to or you will get bad results
Aim for 7 litres to 9 litres total roast chamber volume including the dome of the TO

IMO, more power is better than "just enough".

TO's with the halogen produce radiant and convective heat which to me is an added bonus. I've found IR to be a gentler heat source that can speed up your RoR without as much potential for tipping/scorching.

I have seen,at cvs pharmacy,a turbo oven on sale on the crap after christmas aisle. Claims to be the one seen on tv. Couldnt find power rating but it is halogen. As for power requirements, search this site for minni kkto. One was built with a 1000 w unit

On that note

I have assisted DIYers to make a KKTO with the smaller 20 cm dia pot set
And used the standard TO
No need for a liner or false floor
But full external insulation needs to be used for heat retention

20mm will work? By liner do u mean the perforated thing that separates the chaff or is that something else?

NO
By liner I mean - a combination volume reducer that also encapsulates the insulation
See drawing

Some people choose to use a false floor as a cheaper or free option with full external insulation

Would you measure volume of the perforated strainer to top dome or volume of the lower outer pot to top dome?

The entire roast chamber = where heat reaches
And that includes both the bottom and perforated upper pots & the dome of the Turbo Oven

Ive calculated my volume at about 5l. It will be surrounded by insulation. Hoping it will do 500g.

A shoe in? Good. Now the only deal breaker is my flavorwave t o. Paid 7.50 for it and cant afford the one for 59.99. If i cant coax, well is it worth modifying? If not then i just might have to tuck it away and assemble my next hgbm until i get a better t o.
