What's an ideal distance between the heat source and drum? |

Quote With electric elements there's no negative consequences to being real close to the drum as long as no potential for contact. For gas fired I would keep a minimum of an inch between flame tip and underside of drum at highest firing rate. This will prevent incomplete combustion and carbon depositing on the drum surface.
