DIY Brewer?
CharcoalRoaster
I have no idea if this is possible or not so call me a crazy fool if need beRoflmao

Anyone ever attempted to build their own electric/automatic brewer in the same vein as the Technivorm/Bonavita/Trifecta? Or is sourcing the parts, etc not worth the effort?

anything is worth the effort it it means something to you. there must be a huge burial ground of parts around in 1000's of places.

though with the research that has been done I do not believe there is a NEW way to brew. for the simple experience of doing it yourself go for it.

I've seen some people make their own filter cones; specifically a v60 cone made from wire. You just drop the filter into it. It's not very automatic though.

For me, the goal is great tasting coffee. Regardless of the quality of your beans, coffee tastes best immediately after having been brewed, so freshness is the key. With that in mind, my choice is to brew just one cup at a time. The only time I dust off my drip machines is when I'm hosting a meeting at work, and the only time I get the French press out at home is when the power goes out. But the rest of the time I want one freshly brewed cup. That's why I opted for making Americanos. If that's your goal, too, then look into designing a single cup brewer.
1 pound electric sample roaster, 3 pound direct-flame roaster, both handmade; modified Mazzer Mini grinder, LaSpaziale Vivaldi II automatic espresso machine. When the electricity goes out I make vacpot coffee from beans ground on my Zassenhaus hand grinder, and heat the water with a teakettle on the gas range.

I seem to have a knack for rigging things together that arent intended to be used that way. That said, I took a shampooer apart to get the vc motor. It has a pump, a heater and lots of plumbing. I thought about fashioning a brewer of sorts, but I dont have r and d time. Would be more cost effective to just buy a new one. OR... Modify a cheap brewer to work properly. Nevertheless, if you do build one, please post and tell how you did it.
Bad coffee prevails when good coffee roasters stand by and do nothing.

If I wanted to mod a drip brewer, It'd buy a used Bunn office machine on eBay, carafe or airpot.

Typically, I brew with either a melitta single cup cone or my trusty chemex. However, when I have guests over and they aren't as snobby as me (read: my grandma who loves Folgers) I pull out my drip brewer.

I was looking at the new Bonavita and the trusted Technivorm but dont have the budget to invest. I wasn't sure if it was even cost effective to piece something together that would work as well. I suppose if I want to go that route then I would most likely mod a bunn or something similar.

cheers

That's what we need, a PIDed Melitta filter!
