CompassCoffee-Scamed?
smatty1
I Ordered some Ethiopian Natural Yirg from the only source I could find after Captains Coffee was sold out. It was CompassCoffee....never dealt or even heard of them before.
Shortly after I ordered some, Captains Coffee got some more and I got a bag from them. The captains coffee lot was as expected. The compass did not look, smell or roast like ethiopian. If I had to guess at origin it would be mexican or a south american. Here are pics of after roast of both and the bag in question. Could I be off on this? I'll wait til I taste it to pass total judgement.

Make sure your media file is the right side ( a combined 244 kb )
Also if you have renamed the file it should contain no spaces
If spaces are required add an under_score ThumbsUp

Hi smatty1,

Compass coffee's owner is Mike McKoffee, and I would be surprised to hear that they would scam home roaster on purpose because he is home roaster turned pro. I understand that this is not big argument, but I bought through Green Coffee Buying Club from him when he sold several tons of Yirgacheffe Wote Konga fruit bomb, superb coffee. Is that the coffee you bought?

Also I bought some Panama Geisha from him through GCBC. He imported directly from Panama. He had many many thousands of dollars prepaid member's money, and everything was delivered to everybody's satisfaction.

If wonga tastes like nice mexican, I would go back to Compass and ask if they made mistake.

BTW, I remember that he gives some discount for GCBC members.

Cheers,

Miroslav

I agree with your assesment. I'm drinking this now and the flavor descriptors are pretty accurate. In my over 4 years of roasting I have never seen an ethiopian that looks like these beans. It's probably a more likely scenario that they were mislabled. If that is the case, they do taste like african beans....fruity and bold http://imgur.com/...
Or maybe I just havnt seen em all yet ;)
Hard to compare from the pics but here is ethiopian from captains coffee http://imgur.com/... and here is ethiopian from compass coffee http://imgur.com/... ...In any case, it IS tasty so I'm happy with that :)

I added links to the images. If you want them visible in your thread you need to add them at the bottom under attachments using browse. Max file size 244K. no spaces in the filename. You have to use post reply and not quick reply to do this.

I bought some Ethopian beans a while ago from another seller that were natural process. They were awful. The greens smelled like they sat in fermented coffee-berry juice. The roasted coffee also had this tainted fermented taste. Everyone was raving about them but they were not for me.

I am confused with your statement that the flavor matches the description, but you also mention mislabled. Do you think you got the correct coffee(fruity ethiopian) or something else?

smatty...

all you need to do is read the FAQ for photo's.

it is always a good idea to taste the coffee before you make comments about it!

I mean it's possible that it's mislabled and from a different region but is still a fruity african coffee. I have never seen ethiopian beans that are this large and I've roasted a ton of ethiopians in 4 years. Still, I'm willing to admit that I may not have seen them all ;)

The compass web site description said something about ugly beans and the beans in your picture dont look too ugly so I can see how there could be some questions. Maybe just the original sample were ugly.

How did the captians coffee turn out, that one sounds interesting too, is it a comparable coffee?

They are different. Both good. The captains taste like you would expect a fruity DP ethiopian to taste. The Compass one is fruity and delicious in a way more like a kenya, but not as intense.

I went in and trimmed the quotes, it was getting pretty nested (5 deep) and it makes it harder to follow.

That's what it LOOKS like. The label says natural processed.
