KKTO Roaster Wire Agitator Build
Koffee Kosmo
Having many emails over an extended time to design an easy DIY agitator to suit all variations of the KKTO roaster posed a few challenges

1) Economical easy to obtain parts / items
2) Home handyman can make it
3) Work equally well as the solid blade
4) Adjustable to suit any KKTO variant roaster
5) Adjustable at time of build to any width of roast chamber

After some 20 or so designs I found the best performing design was archived by using the wire strands from a whisk, directly coupled onto the shaft

The design brief was met and was actualy exceeded
Below is a series of build photos and a diagram for all to follow easily

The diagram shows how it is put together
Photos build series are of parts required, and step by step build

Also a safe fan guard mod for better heat distribution

This mod is safe for all
It allows the user to roast larger batches
It helps the Turbo Oven to cycle better and quicker

Hi KK,

These are mods I wish I had at the beginning. The agitator/motor shaft was a problem for me and I wound up cheating and getting one of your KKTO blades. I switched to the wires to test and it really does a great job. I am going to keep them.

Are the "S" wire bends away from the direction of rotation like the blade agitator? Mine are straight and I will add some bends to try. My motor goes CCW in rotation.

I heard about removing the fan guard completely to get some extra wattage out of the heater. I did this and have no problems. All the other safety devices are gone from my oven anyway.

Nice mods and I hope this gets others into this type of roaster.

The leading edge of the bends point to the direction of the rotation
I have always used counter clockwise rotation

So in the photos it reflects this
The wire can also be left as loops as per the photo 3
Low speed motors will agitate fine with this design

Bending the wire blades allows the user to tune to ones roaster and speed of rotation photo 2

I always fine tune a KKTO by testing the mixing / agitation with three red beans as a visual photo 1

Mixing the beans well by observing is key
Mixing not pushing the beans will always produce better, more consistent and even roast results

Where do you get a shaft to make something like this?

The shaft was specially fabricated for me from when I had kits available
But that shaft was made specifically for the Arcosteel pot set and the matching base

You can fabricate one to suit your build

I like the design of your agitator, and after staring at it long enough ThumbsUp I see that it is a very simple design, and it's given me some ideas for making mine. The whisk wire would definitively stir through the beans better, and would not just push them around.

For anyone wanting to get the perfect Wire agitator shape

This shape will also work for the solid blade but with a few bend tweaks

Its my pleasure to upload this update for all to use
Print this drawing and use it as a template

Best way to use it is
Print the shape and cut in a circle to suit your perforated insert
Poke a hole in the center
Place it over the shaft and let it sit on the bottom of the insert

Bend your wire agitator to the shape
When done Rip the paper away
Easy

I guess this shape orientation is valid for CW rotation, right ?

A recommended blade count ?

I have a 10 RPM motor atm, do you think is too slow ?
Here is a video showing in action with 600 g of greens:
https://www.youtu...OlE3pfpblA

The big problem I encountered with this type of agitator is after drying phase, the beans are lighter and the whole mass start to rotate with the blades, instead being rock and rolled... so I am forced to shake the whole pot every minute, to to tear down the piles that builds between blades.

The optimum agitator speed is 65 to 70 rpm " for 2 blades "
Using more blades will allow one to use a slower rpm motor

Yes the blades are bent to suit an anti clockwise direction
The bends in the blades is such, that they mix and direct the beans to the outside wall and back again to the centre, while causing a corkscrew motion at the same time
The bent blades need a 10mm / 1/2" gap from the side wall

Having straight blades will in affect push the bean mass in a large mass
The bend blade pushes and allows an escape of massed beans at the outside wall
10prm is a tad to slow, I recommend that you find and fit a faster rpm motor

May I have a video of such blade in action ?

I can't visualize what could bring the beans back to the middle, and I thought I know a ton of physics...

I know that 6x RPM optimal speed from the drum roasting theory, but the reasons are completely different than in the case of a flat surface agitation, as in a TO "pan" scenario.
Maybe your pan bottom is not flat, but very mild funnel ? This could explain the force which could bring the beans back to the center...

Don't let me wrong, I don't doubt your expertise, but I want to understand first, the believe part comes after, naturally ;)
