Had posted back in the Spring about having ignored the Gene during its cooling cycle while listening to music on iphone. The drum wasn't fastened securely, it dropped out while upside down and ruined the gear. Tim Skaling quickly mailed me another. This one had changed since the original. Now the inside of the gear is made of brass instead of a type of nylon blend type plastic. Very easy to replace. OK Did four or five roasts successfully. A week later no heat and an error message. Replaced the heater element had on hand with a new.... one-no heat. That meant the original element with 1100+ roasts on it was still good. Verified this with a meter. Slapped my forehead, should have done this to begin with. Called Tim and he immediately diagnosed and quickly sent me several electrical parts including a new power circuit board Replaced everything while trying to heat each time. Replaced the power circuit board last. That was the prob! Glancing back from my roasting notes from yesterday: Colunbia Huila Bruselas, 260 G Up to 465 at 5 minute mark 424 at 7:00 440 at 8:00 460 at 10:00 You get the picture. Over 10% hotter than when new. Don't know if it was new power circuit board or new heating element but this thing rocks! And another thought. Don't have to go above 465 even on SHB beans. I'm sorry if my praise of Tim Skaling is so effusive but Gene Caf? Customer Service is just out of this world. |
