There is popcorn in my coffee
Airhan
I was roasting some Kenyan coffee from Sweet Maria's today, and I noticed something white flashing around in my roast chamber, upon dumping the beans to cool them off, what do I find?
A popped pop-corn kernel.
I hope this is someone at SM's idea of a practical joke, and not my poppery randomly generating popcorn.

Maybe I need a de-kerneler in stead of a de-stoner. Roflmao

Many areas in Kenya and particularly south and central America now used for growing coffee were previously used for growing maize and sometimes go back and forth.

How Zea mays var. everta (popcorn) ends up in the mix would be interesting to know.

Most likely, when shuffling green coffee around the drying patios and other locations allowing contact with soil, popcorn kernels get scooped up and never get culled out.

I remember at the roasting facility in Boulder, CO, we'd see a few in the cooling tray now and then but was usually a central American variety.

It looks like your popper is still capable of popping those guys!

Coffee will pop. Check the remaining hull. It might be coffee. Cheers

That's pretty interesting, I'll have to keep an eye out for for stray kernels. It also appears that I have a PID controlled popcorn popper, I'll have to try finding a good profile for popcorn on movie nights!
