I roast with a Hottop. I'm getting a bit tired (and my wife, much more so) of chaff flying around. I'd like a simple way to separate most of the chaff after roasting. I've been trying a salad spinner which gets mediocre results. I have a central vac system, so my ideal would be something that hooks up to that. I want something I can put together in an afternoon. Any ideas? Barry

Hi Barry, Unless you have an central vac outlet in the garage I would recommend A seperate cooler that 1) Sucks down 2) Use a two screen system - large size at top smaller at bottom Something like this - http://forum.home...post_53285 I home roast and I like it. Designer of the KKTO

Fabulous! I roast in the kitchen under a high-flow outdoor vented hood. I do have a central vac outlet in the garage but that's obviously moot ; ) More importantly, I have one in the kitchen. I'll try to put something like this together. Thanks! I did a websearch for this a few weeks ago but didn't come across this solution. Barry

What are the two screens (as opposed to one) for?

Quote The large screen is to hold the beans but allow the chaff to pass and cool the beans fast The second screen is to catch the chaff for later disposal It's best to dispose the bulk of the chaff rather than vacuum in a central system KK I home roast and I like it. Designer of the KKTO

In general, a 120 mesh screen will protect the vac and a 30 mesh screen will stop the beans..I've been trapping chaff in my RC with two screens for quite some time now..Happy Holidays!! |

Just use the 5 gal bucket/colander system hooked up to the central vac

A few questions: 1) Why wouldn't I want the chaff to go into the central vac, that's what it's for. I don't want to put the chaff in the garbage pail because it ends up flying all over the place. If I do want the chaff to get sucked down by the vacuum does that mean I only need the one screen? Can I use a more standard collander? 2) RE: 5 gallon bucket method- Any links to a simple design? I search, saw a funky one with a long tube (nice design but too bulky for my kitchen roasting. Barry

Yeah, my description was lacking. I have a different setup for roasting where most of the chaff gets blown out during roast, but my bean collection vacuum setup holds the beans and sucks out the remaining chaff. I actually use a pasta strainer. Small enough holes to keep beans in, large enough to let chaff out. Basically bottom side of 5 gal bucket holesaw a hole large enough for your vac hose. Cut a hole with case cutter in lid large enough for pasta strainer. That's it. It's about a 10 minute project. Chaff in the the central vac, beans in the strainer, beans cooled at the same time. Tad-ah! This is a real quick boring vid I did of what I am talking about. I use it mainly as a bean evac unit but it also clears chaff. -Jon

How good is this at sucking the chaff through the holes (as that's my main goal). It seems like the other method (screen / dome) would do that better as the chaff doesn't have to go through any holes though the suction / physics would have to be such that the chaff lifted up but not the beans. With your method, no complicated physics subtleties. Barry

Barry have a look at my cooler build However replace the exhaust fan with your Central vacuum And you only need to use one bucket for your application http://forum.home...ad_id=1183 KK Edited by JackH on 12/19/2014 5:34 AM I home roast and I like it. Designer of the KKTO

Barry, Here's a colander-based cleaner that is quite substantial and works well for up to one pound of beans..its made from one 5x5x2 pvc tee. Note: Before putting the holes around the top, it would sling the beans into the air every time I shut off the vac.

Based on replies, I came up with what's pictured below. Parts: 1) 1-.25 in. Poly Insert Male Adapter http://www.lowes....2&Ntt= (got it at Lowes for $0.65 2) Reflector lamp http://www.amazon...&psc=1 3) Mannysen Stainless Steel Flour Sifter Sieve with Fine Wire Mesh 21cm/8.27" DIA http://www.amazon...&psc=1 Conveniently, You can remove the electrical stuff from the lamp but leave the collar that connects to the reflector, the coupler then screws right into this and to other (up) end of the coupler just happens to be exactly the right size to receive a standard household vacuum hose. If the coupler was an elbow joint, this would work even more nicely. This works great, removing almost all the chaff in 10 seconds while not sucking any of the coffee beans up. I wish I'd done this years ago. There's much less chaff flying around now!

In case it wasn't obvious: 1) Dump the beans into the sieve 2) attach the vacuum to the connector. 3) Suck the chaff up. The bottom of the sieve shouldn't be exactly flush with the counter as air needs to go through it so the beans don't get sucked up. Barry
