Beans no flavor
RandyH
I'm roasting with a West Bend Stir Crazy from Sweet Maria's, using coffee from them as well. I am going well into 2nd crack but the coffee doesn't taste good. Very mild, not much flavor. Is it the coffee or am I doing something wrong on my end? Thanks for the help.

Hi Randy

If you are getting beans from SM then it's extremely unlikely that the beans are the issue.

What is the timing of your roast? I don't have personal experience with the stir crazy but lots of others do.

I am averaging 3.0-3.5 minutes to first crack and 10-14 on second crack. The timing varies with the changing of the bean type.

Hi Randy,

Is this the West bend air crazy? Sweet Maria's sells them and they are poppers. The time to second crack is way too long and is probably baking all the good flavors out of the beans.

First crack seems about right for a popper. Try not going too long after first crack. I don't know why it is taking that long for second crack. Usually once first goes, it flows into second unless the power is cut or reduced.

One plus to the likelihood of 'not the beans'.
You don't mention the origin of the beans.
I got some Kona from SM once, and called them because the flavor was non-existent. It tuns out it was my roasting style.
Kona is a low elevation bean. Also, the flavor of Kona is more subtle than I had been used to.

The title is "SW Beans no flavor". Did you mean SM Beans?

Thanks to all for your replies. I will adjust my time and see what happens. Two corrections..Yes, I am speaking of the West Bend "Air" Crazy and not the "Stir" Crazy and Yes, I meant for the title to say "SM" and not "SW".
See what happens when you're caffeine deprived?! Thanks for the help.

Randy, I thought someone had asked but I ask as Ken does:

what are you roasting??

it helps a lot if we know.

ginny

yes, I changed the title...

RandyH
My apologies for the delayed response. I have been way from my computer.
These are the Sweet Marie beans I am "roasting":
1. New Classic Espresso Blend
2. Liquid Amber Espresso Blend
3. Espresso Monkey Blend
4. Ethiopiques Blend
5. Ethiopia Bonga Forest Makira
6. Rwanda Coffee Villages
7. Sumatra Lintong Tano Batak
8. Brazil Dry Process Carmo De Minas

Thank you for your help!

Randy. It seems like your thermostat is kicking in and turning off the heater, cooling down then turning on. If you blast it with a heat gun,it will compensate for this (until you get inside it and pinch it together so it stays on) (then you can have a runaway 2nd crack) . It's a temporary measure. Ben

all excellent coffee. gotta be roaster issue you really cannot get bad tasting beans from those batches at Sweet Maria.

maybe we need to get you a new roaster...

I just realized what could be the problem or at least one of them. I am not plugged directly into the wall outlet. I am plugged into a multi-strip that's plugged into a multi-strip that's plugged into an extension cord. The popper surges up and down during the roast. Could that be the reason? It looks like Green Acres where everything comes together!

Find or wire a dedicated plug (breaker to plug). It should make a big difference.

I did this for my hottop (dedicated 20 amp circuit with 1 box on the circuit)
