I apologize if this has already been answered. Looking at vacuum motors online, they seem to start around $50. What about buying a cheap $20 vacuum and gutting it or perhaps a garage sale vacuum? Does anyone think that there is a vacuum motor that would be too weak to lift a pound of green coffee? And second question, has anyone done anything to muffle the noise so it's easier to hear the cracks? I'm in the middle of a rather unsuccessful build, and I'm two workarounds away from scrapping the project and rebuilding completely. |

I chose not to recycle other people's dirt. So anything I bought used was from a spa system. I do have a back-up motor. It's a two-stage, flow-through, 7.25", 1.5HP, vacuum cleaner motor. I paid $85 for it new. However, the used Sundance Spa blower is still going strong for almost five years now. What kind of problems are you having? Have you studied some of the builds documented here: http://forum.homeroasters.org/forum/v...rum_id=134 |

I have been sifting through the above sticky's, but I haven't stumbled across quite what I'm looking for. My current issue to bean loft, or lack there of. I'm mimicking the build from here: http://www.cyberelectronics.org/?p=699 so I know that an air mattress blower is feasible. Right now, I can't get much bean mass moving, but I am waiting on a screen to arrive to mod the shaker as the original builder showed. I think it's probably a safe bet that the perimeter holes in the shaker (as the middle is blocked b the element) don't allow enough airflow at baseline. I am moving half way across the country in two months, so I am trying to keep my proof of concept build cheap... less than the cost of a spa blower or even a vacuum motor. I don't know to what kind of apartment I'll be moving into or even if I'll have an outside area, so I want to keep the build small enough to run on a single 20 amp circuit. ![]() The painters tape is only temporary for sealing the joints. ![]() Current unmodified shaker bottom. To be cut out and replaced with a screen. Thanks, Mark |

That looks like a typical 3.5 inch cocktail shaker top. Most have 19, 0.15 inch holes, and many have been used to build coffee roasters. I suspect your 'blower' doesn't provide enough pressure at the low flow required to loft coffee beans.

Keep your eyes out for a little handvac shaped like this one. They contain a 3"blower/motor that produces the pressure you need. While it still provides more flow than you need, that's easy to bleed off. Pressure is the key. Most small blowers are of the scroll variety. Not very useful. That handvac is available under a few names. probably 20$ brand new. Good luck. Cheers, Scott

Thanks for the help! I guess there isn't really a way around a couple circuits or 240v. Fuller doesn't make that particular model anymore, but do you think that either of these would work? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002D47...6Y54HFHZHW http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00A7BX...ref=plSrch |

The Fuller will work for sure, although I believe that has a 4" blower. Probably a bit oversized, but easy to bleed off unwanted airflow. On the Scorpion; I'm surprised by the 7amp rating. I'll bring up a schematic tomorrow and try to confirm which blower it uses. Cheers, -Scott |

Awesome, thanks for taking your time to look! Other than those two, I couldn't find any other similar looking vacuums. |

Shop vac blower of choice for me, this is one I use http://www.homedepot.com/p/Stinger-2-...021998-_-N Can't vouch for it, but think it would be big enough for a 1lb, but you can get 8 amp vacs for $50 and that would be plenty big for sure. Don't want too big though, so I would get small one and hook up and if too small then return and go bigger. |

Be careful with shopvacs. Some, like the one I have presently has a motor built into the plastic upper housing and is not a discrete part that can be removed from the primary housing. Others have a separate vac motor can like you see on regular vacuum cleaners. I got a two speed vacuum. Brand called Filter Magic. Its perfect for a pound on low speed. Maybe Scott has some more insight on this brand/model. Ben

Sadly, the blower doesn't show up separately on either schematic. Again, the Fuller will work for sure, the Scorpion I can't vouch for. Ben, would that be a Filter Queen "Majestic" ? Cheers, Scott |

Scott it's the filter magic by SMI. Not a cheap vacuum. But who knows what's out there...

I spotted this thing....might be worth looking into. 45" of lift, 60 cfm, with stainless steel housing at 4" dia. , that includes a funnel shape!! I'm familiar with this company. Their stuff is simple to work with. This could provide a great little blower and some body parts to work with. Just a thought. Cheers, Scott http://www.staples.com/office/supplie...oCgKnw_wcB |

A little out of the price range for a single component at this juncture. I think I'll check out the $20 HD shop vac. I can use that for cooling as well. Thank you to everyone for the help! |

I put it in the shed and cut a hole in the wall and ran hose outside to make it quiet as possible. Also put outlet on inside of shed and connected it to a speed controller on the outside to control it. I think it's pretty good setup. You could dismantle it if you want and put in case or something. I would start by connecting it as is for a proof of concept before dismantling to make sure it will work for you. For around $5 they have various rubber connectors/reducers you can use to connect to the machine. |

UPDATE: I would like to thank everyone again for their input. I ran a proof of concept with a small shop vac, drain pipe, shaker top, and bake around with one pound of coffee. Low and behold, success! Can wait to try it with heat! |

Cool. Can I ask what sized shop vac you used for 1lb? |
