Burr Grinders
CharcoalRoaster
Received the Solis 166 in the mail today and am pretty impressed by this little guy. Runs smooth and quiet with very little fines and/or grain variation.

Another quick question for you Allen in regards to dialing it in for pourovers in my Chemex:

I ran a couple of beans through on the middle setting (picture of a pourover) and the grind seemed a little too fine. What have you found to be best?

Thanks!

Set to the coarsest setting and examine the grind. If it looks coarse enough than your good to go. I've found with any non-commercial "home-use" grinders, for drip brew, go as coarse as it will allow before it starts to make irregular particles or flakes. If adjusting to maximum produces no irregular particles then you may be able to coax a coarser grind by pulling the body and resetting the register plate a couple of notches. I would suggest adjusting the register plate to allow you to produce irregular particles on the coarsest setting so you're confident you're getting the coarsest clean grind possible.

"What have you found to be best"? For my Chemex and pretty much any pourover, grinding through a home-use grinder, I like to go as coarse as they'll go before the flakes start appearing.

Which model did you get Tony?

Baratza Encore from Batch Coffee in Plymouth, Mass, and arrived within a day. Excellent service, and was in touch with them from start to delivery. And I will also be picking up an Esatto. Yup, I know may thing it's expensive, but I want it. Of course it was a Christmas gift to myself, so I have to wait to use it.

Okay, after a couple days of use I'm liking this grinder a lot. Such a consistent grind, easily adjustable, and really easy to use. Right now I'm using setting 22 for Chemex and it's been working like a champ for me. Paired with the Bonavita electric kettle, (1 Liter model) it is a winning combo for me.

Tony, I use that same combo except I use a clever coffee dripper. The kettle gets the temperature just right.

One simple mod I did that I found very useful was to take some of the wife's nail polish (pink) and marked the hopper at the protrusion that tells you what # the grinder is set at.

this allows me to see the setting from across the room.

Every Thursday Baratza lists out their refurbs. These are returns that Baratza gores though, repairs/replaces parts as needed and re-adjusts. their refurbs come with the same warranty as a new unit (1 year). I've bought nothing but refurbs over the past 10 years and been satisfied with them. Encore refurb is $99

Thank you for the awesome link...my Encore will be delivered on Wednesday! I have high hopes for the anti-static grinds container...well....and the ability to grind right into my portafilter!

There is no such thing as "anti static" grounds hopper.

Even both of my Forte BG grinders have "static cling"

You may be correct, but, Baratza says differently.

The 100+ gram capacity bin and the discharge chute are made of an anti-static plastic, which helps battle the inevitable static better than a coating.

And I remember 5-7 years ago, when I got a Virtuoso, I got an Anti-Static bin from them, I special ordered. It did not come with the one I had, at the time.

My little Black & Decker flat burr grinder had lots of static after the grind, and I always had to scrap the hopper out to get the rest of the grounds out. But I attributed that to it not being able to grind as course as I wanted for my Chemex. It was always too fine. But I've been using setting 22 on the Encore and it's been a clean dump of the hopper every time.

Just my personal observation. ThumbsUp

I was lucky enough to find a NIB Bunn LPG-2E on CL years back for next to nothing from a cafe going out of business. The grind consistency is great and it's a really solid machine.

That's great to hear Tony! Nothing drives me more bonkers than a grinder that gives you the Tesla hair raising static charge and subsequent grounds scatter all over the kitchen. I had to return 2 or 3 grinders years ago because of this problem. Baratza, to my knowledge, is one of the few, if not the only brand of home-use grinders that typically pass the static charge test from the reports I've gotten.

The only thing that sticks in mine is chaff. The ground beans fall right out

I, too, get chaff sticking in the Preciso. I have not had that with any other Baratza. A minor issue, I do not do anything about it, but tap it down after the hopper is out.
But, no static, as I received the grinder from them.

I've bought all of my grinders directly from Baratza.

All of them have had chaff sticking issues. It is no big, I just use one of my grinder brushes and brush the grounds hopper out into the sink.

Picked this up off ebay recently (the Preciso, not the Fresh Roast)...needs a few parts, but really awesome shape...pretty dirty, but I was expecting that for the price and it included the knob!!! ;-)

Ironically, this grinder was refurbished by Pierce Jens. I gotta love that, lol! =)

Added: I am curious as to why the Baratza discussion posts here in this thread have all disappeared?

Linnea and others wondering:

all ya had/have to do was ask an admin as nothing leaves the building without some admins handprint on it.

the posts have left the building as I took them down. I did not feel that Tony's thread about his grinder should be hijacked by another issue, a grinder problem with Baratza.

it seemed out of place to me.

I have kept the postings about the grinder issue with Baratza and am considering setting up a forum for just this type of thing, warranty/company issues.

this issue was, for me, out of place in the thread it was in...

PM with any concern,

thanks,

I use a Krups burr grinder but noticed it was not producing coarse enough granules for the french press. I took it apart and noticed it had limits on the control to prevent it from grinding very fine or very coarse. I removed the limits and it now grinds much coarser. The grind, however, is not consistent as it will contain a small amount of finer grinds. Still much better than the original settings.

Here is my write up on how to modify:

ginny
I don't think that a coarse grind is ever consistent...
