Math question
DConnolly
How much would a roasting vessel have to hold of green beans to make a full pound of roasted coffee at the end?

I would like to perhaps build my own roaster at some point, and just trying to get some info ahead of time.

I'd like to be able to end up with a full pound(or as close to) of coffee.

Thank you for any information.

That's going to depend on the roast, Light roast can have 12-13% weight loss. Espresso roast can have as much as 18-19% moisture loss. I Don't roast past that point so don't know about those black beans. So, just do the math on the roast you like and add that much more green to a pound to end up with a pound of roasted coffee.

I usually figure a pound turns into a little under 13oz once I cull any quakers or overroasted beans and figure a few beans make an escape from the RC during the roast. That would be about 20oz for a final #.

One word of caution if you are trying to figure volume considerations. Some beans take up way more room per # than others. Elephant beans, monsooned, low altitude etc to leave to extra space for yourself.

A Pyrex Bake-A-Round will easily do the job for you. The main consideration is not water loss but bean expansion...
No oil on my beans...

Did you decide what type of roaster you are building?

Preferably I'd like to make a drum roaster. I'm still in the idea stages at the moment. Figuring out what materials, and personal skill/knowledge(LIMITED) I have at the moment.

I know beans expand, lose moisture, and change all around. I just wasn't sure if their was a typical "ball-park" percentage I'd be looking for in weight lose. If it helps I would like to do a variety of roast degrees from light to dark, as I'm still in the learning process.

really depends on the greens but I usually get a pound of roasted from a pound and a quarter of beans on average.

it's a bean issue.
