I purchased two (2) Poplite poppers from the local Goodwill for a whopping total of $8. The first one I added a piece of 3" duct work so that the beans would not blow out of the heat chamber. It roasted to 2nd crack in less than 4 minutes so I would unplug it during roasting to extend the roast time. Tired of plugging/unplugging I modified the 2nd popper by adding an AC relay, thermocouple, raspberry pi, flashing LEDs, and some web code and created a roaster with temperature control and logging ability. I call it ELF for Electric Lights and Fire and it makes the world's best cup of coffee. :) Here is a video of ELF in operation: https://www.youtu...afDSEWpHUM Here is write up on the design of ELF: http://coffeehack...berry.html

That is supper cool!!!! Love it!! You also have given me some clues on the connecting of a thermocouple to a computer in a form I can begin to understand. I mentally want a USB connection, why I don't know. ![]() |

Glad I could help. There are thermocouples that connect to USB but the ones I found had a maximum temperature of 225 or so. If you find one that goes higher let me know. |

Did six (6) roasts today with ELF. Here is the last one where I tried to get the temp to 500. Wouldn't quite get there. Got to 495.

Been doing all sorts of things with the RasPi (got two PiZero, two Pi3, and one Pi2) but integrating the device in my homeroasting has been on my mind since the beginning. Just saw your project in Raspberry Pi Weekly.https://www.raspb...e-roaster/ Does sound like a fun project, but a bit involved given my lack of skills in soldering and electronics. Will try to bring the schematics to a local club, though. Maybe they can reassure me. --

Hey Guys, if you are going to start discussions about builds, please use the proper forums as it will be hard to move stuff later and here it will get lost or deleted. thanks in advance, ginny ![]() |

@Enkerli, Thanks. It was a lot of fun to build. My soldering skills were lackluster when I started the project but I watched a couple of youtube vids, practiced a bit, and viola I was able to do some decent soldering. Give it a shot. You'll be a pro in no time. |
