Direct read digital therm $11 today only
turtle
Newegg is selling a direct read digital thermometer today only (one of their "shell shocker deal" offerings) for $10.99 shipped

Price is good for 24 hours only (or until sold out)

http://www.newegg...ocker.aspx

You will find a row of items (above the one being displayed), The last one on that list is the digital direct read. Click on the image and you will get the purchase page for that item.

I do not own nor work for Newegg, I'm just passing along what I feel is a good price on a useful piece of equipment that can be used when you are roasting.

I have a different brand. I'm sure the one I have cost more than that one does.

I use it all the time

Here it is reading the temp of my burners during my roaster build.

Well, I'll play around with it with my Behmor, (probably pointless), and then try to find some interesting spots when I get my North.

I have a Raytek MT-6 that sells for around $75 and a high end CHINO IR-AH made for reading long distances a was about $2,500. I've never tried the cheaper ones and probably wouldn't care to based on how the Raytek works. The surface of the area you are shooting at has a huge impact on how it reads and I find most of the time, you can't depend on it being accurate, sometimes not even close. The Chino works great and very reliable on most all surfaces for giving accurate readings, but I don't think many people want to pay that much for one.
By the way, I didn't buy the Chino per say. A friend of mine buys auction lots of construction equipment when they finish the job and it was in a box of stuff he bought for a few dollars. I saw it and asked him for it. He gave it to me for $20, but neither of us realized the value until I got it home and looked it up on the computer. I never did tell him the value of it.

I have one, different brand. I have used it with an OLD, Griswold, cast iron, waffle maker on a camp stove. I'm just saying that the ways to use one is so varied, only limited by your imagination. This use helped me keep the temp even on the 2 sides.

I use mine to measure griddle temp before starting pancakes or hash browns. To check oven temp (read the stone in the oven). Check the temp of my auto engine when I thought things were running too hot.

It is a reflective thermometer. You can read the temp of anything you can point it at.

I use my hand-held RayTec to:
1) Measure the ambient temperature in my un-heated garage.
2) Measure the glass roast chamber temperature during warm-up.
3) Measure the reclaimed blower air intake temperature during roasting.
4) Measure the bean temperature during cooling.
They are very useful devices.
No oil on my beans...

I was wanting one for the longest time, and found http://www.amazon...ge_o00_s00
Cheap, but not really going to be used a whole lot, only when roasting,

A prime example of what I was talking about being inconsistent depending on the surface you are shooting. Yesterday I tried reading the boiler temp on this Livia 90 espresso machine I've been resurrecting. shooting the side of the bronze boiler, my Raytek was showing a rock solid 87 degrees (F) every time I shot the side of it, but a touch probe on my Fluke thermocouple, that's usually pretty accurate, was showing it at 203 degrees on the same spot. Shot the pressure relief valve on top of the boiler and it showed 183 degrees. Shot some hot water in a cup that coming out of it and it showed 152 degrees while a thermocouple in the water was showing 196 degrees.

The battery was dead in the Chino, so I was not able to compare it but it's usually pretty accurate. Also, the RayTek is accurate on some surfaces. I bought that touch probe for the Fluke after getting the RayTek primarily just to check it's accuracy and it varies.

The Raytek does work great for checking the cast iron griddle I use on the stove to cook steaks and pan cakes. Has always been very accurate on it.

I picked up this one for the heck of it, but like Ben said, you need to know where to shoot it for the actual temp. Mainly going to use mine for the KKTO that I'm building
