Many of you have fantastic DIY drum roasters. I would like to know how the chaff is handled. Does it burn up during roast, or do you clean it out of the bottom of the roaster each time, or is it expelled via exhaust or cyclone? For a short time I used a drum and BBQ grill, and all the chaff fell down to the burners, some burned, some not. Is chaff something that should be dealt with in design, or not worried much about? There is a usually some air flow through the roaster to remove the smoke and chaff created/released during roasting. Unless your roasting in the bush it (the chaff) generally needs collecting or separating from the smoke (it will clog everything up pretty quickly) a cyclone or similer seperator is a great way to achieve this... One of my brothers Roasters 8kg uses a direct flame inside the drum which does burn/char some of the chaff but doesn't remove it completely...... they still have a cyclone as well... Cyclones |
