Which beans for espresso?

For the holidays, I am planning a gift for my nephew who loves espresso. I am getting him a starter kit to make his own roast. So I have two questions:

1. What beans are traditionally used for espresso?

2. I've heard the rage is now making espresso with roasts other than dark, what beans and roasts have shown promise for espresso?

I don't drink espresso, so someone else will have to help you there. I do latte's for my wife and a lot of her friends and cappuccino's for me and some of her friends.
I used to try to blend beans, or order SM's different espresso blends but I've found that if I just use a SO Brazilian, roasted to just before or a couple snaps into SC, it taste just as good by the time you load all that milk and sugar on top of it and makes life much simpler with bean inventory because I also use a lot of Brazilian for coffee.

If you have not blended before, grab a pound of each of SM's espresso bends and see which one you like.

Then stick with their blend for a while before "branching out"

Once you get started, you may find you will be searching out some robusta beans to toss into your blend if you like the European taste

but that's me.

I would go to Sweet Maria's and select a nice selection of his "good for espresso beans.

All Arabica beans can be roasted for Espresso
The question is or should be - do all roasters roast to suit espresso ?

A good espresso machine is calibrated to a fine temperature band
This temperature band is closely related to the roast depth of the beans

Best roast depth for an espresso machine is just at the cusp of second crack
