Vertical TO - is this possible ?
renatoa
Found these days by hazard a drum with a volume of about 4 liter, that looks too perfect for coffee roasting for a classic drum roaster approach.

Then I start thinking... what if I place that drum in an appropriate steel cylinder, that I already have, fit the TO at one side, and a tempered glass lid same size as TO at the other side, turn the whole assembly 90 degrees, obtaining something that resemble to a front loading washing machine...

was this ever done ?
Would this setup give satisfactory results, i.e. better agitation than a classic horizontal TO, that I was never able to build an agitator good for even 500 grams...

Thank you to brainstorm together on this subject :)

I have posted this design that uses (2) Twin turbo ovens for a drum roaster a few years ago

Hope it helps and gets you motivated

If you are talking about the TO unit on it's side
Then electrically it will work in any position

However you will need to have a secure "clip on" system for it to work
I have about 20 designs on various Turbo Oven applications for coffee roasting

I'm sure I have a design where I used the TO on the rear of the drum for heat - however there is a trade-off when using 1 TO unit with a larger roast chamber volume
They are lower roast weights, and if the roast chamber volume is just over the threshold you will get failed roasts

The drawing on the post above with the twin TOs is for a minimum of 1 KG roast

Good advices, thank you !
Strangely, wasn't notified by email about none of the replies in this thread...

What do you think about the 5 liter drum volume (22 cm dia by 14 cm height)
How much coffee could host and ensure an even roast ?
May I hope for 1 kg ?
The pot/oven who will host this drum has 12 liter (32cm dia by 16 cm height)

About heating, the TO has 1400W, but I think to add a novelty to this approach, 1000 W induction heating on the bottom wall of the oven.
Am I mad enough ? :)

A 12lt total roast chamber volume it to high for one TO and you won't get to 1 kg
If you add another heat source it needs to be fan assisted

I have experimented with a second passive heat source and was not successful with it

Just remembered another design and went back into my design drawings
Other than the KKTO

Note this is a rework of another design - The Nesco
Although I thought it up without knowing about the Nesco because the auger design is centuries old

In the KKTO Design went with an agitator blade because it's easier to manufacture - http://forum.home...post_11530

That being said - you can use an well designed cone shape auger for agitation in the roast chamber

When using a drum with hot air roasting, i.e. convection, not conduction, rotating speed can be a lot smaller than the recommended 6x RPM from classic drum roasting.
The proof is the Gene roaster, whose drum rotates with 10 RPM, check video, one turn is 6-7 seconds:

The agitation of the Gene cafe has a different action to that of a regular drum and along with the bean weight it's capable of roasting the air speed is also a factor
( I personally feel it's not fast enough )

In a standard drum the speed for good results is 40 to 50 RPM but that is dependant on the dum and if it has veins

Ok, another example, this time drum is faster than Gene, 20 RPM, one of my other (commercial) roasters, Dieckmann RoestMeister:
https://youtu.be/...wVGE?t=211
The guys who manufacture my actual 10 RPM motor can offer me 30.40 and 60 RPM as alternatives, remember, this is for a drum inside a TO pot, not for an agitator !
Can't decide between 30 and 40 :)

I have reviewed that roaster about 8 years ago and it was challenged
You also need to use low chaff beans or you get a big mess

Have you seen the link I supplied to you on post #6
You may need to view those videos on a PC

Yep, did something similar using an ebay basket having 18Lx12Dcm, placed in a 12 lt pot, too much space around, unable to roast even more than 333 grams.
Now waiting a bigger basket, 23L x 14D cm, hope to have success with 500 grams and a pendular Gene style rotating, that can be easily accomplished using a decentered rotation shaft ;)

But the OP of this task is not about the above placement style of the drum, what I want to accomplish was inspired by this machine:
http://en.ceroffe...oaster.php
... by replacing inner radiant heater by a TO, mounted as a washing machine front loading door.h

Found this little gem some time ago...

https://www.youtu...ivLKX9L6Rk

... and since then I am obsessed about an upscaled TO version.

I see a lot of advantages versus my actual "drum in a pot" approach I use for some... 8 months.
What I dislike actually:
- lots of heat wasted when drum is loaded, also hard to drop, handling of the hot drum isn't easy... and take more than 30 seconds.
- 12 l pot needed to accommodate a 3.5 l drum, thus lot of wasted space, an approach based on the ideea above can be done using a 7 l pot
- difficult to measure BT

All these drawbacks are gone with the M12 build, do you see any negative in this method ? I see only one, chaff dropping and burning into the heater :(

It is interesting. Is that a flour sifter?
The stirring part of the roaster is what I had the most trouble with.

I like the design.

Yes, flour sifter, the whole parts list can be found here:

My actual drum does a good job of mixing beans, but loading and dropping are a pain, sometimes literally, skin pain ;)

I still think that my original design is a better option

However a similar design to the one you posted - just sideways has been available for several years
