I have been trying Scott Rao Hario V60 pourover this week. 1:17 and blooming with 2 parts water the first 45 seconds then splitting the rest into 2 pours. A little stirring is included. We like it.

My brew ratio is 1:17 (exactly 59.5 g/L). That's roughly 8.5g per 5-oz cup.

When your wife thinks 30 grams for a 6 cup setting is strong, you learn to drink muddy water when you are making coffee for both of you.

I use a rule of thumb of 60 grams per liter. 8 cups (1 liter, 32 oz) = 60 grams, 6 cups (3/4 liter, 24 oz) = 45 grams. 10 cups = 75 grams 12 cups = 90 grams

I typically use Melitta filters in my Bonavita 1900S and am up for a reorder. Out of curiosity are these still the best filter options out there? Anything new to the market that I'm unaware of?

Yes they are if my experience with the BV1800 is a factor. I discovered store brand, made of filter paper, slow down the extraction and I have box of #4s from Kroger that DO NOT WORK...
No oil on my beans...

Technivorm makes a house branded paper filter that is Melitta style.

I've always used the Melitta branded filters (not "fits" Melitta copies) and not had any complaints.

I prefer the bleached paper as the brown ones have an off taste to me.

I always rinse my filters before using them by placing them in the holder and running boiling water through them, usually into the thermal carafe that I will be brewing or storing the coffee in.

This does a few things:

1) it rinses any taste out of the filter

2) it pre-heats the brew basket

3) it pre-heats the brew receptacle (if you allow the hot water to drain into your pot).

I've tried quite a few filters and without doubt I've found Filtropa to be the best.

As above definitely bleached and rinsed.

Fun fact - Technivorm filters are private labeled Filtropa roar

I've just found unbleached to impart more paper flavor. The chemex ones are the absolute worst though.

An interesting experiment is to take a bleached and unbleached filter and pour some just off boil water through each and taste the results.

Don't worry the inquisition isn't coming BBQ grill

I wash them with off boil water every time.
I'd rather not get residual bleach every time I make coffee with a filter. Days become weeks, become years, become decades.
Just my preference against chemicals.

I hear you about chemical exposure - acute usually doesn't get you it's the chronic.

Just food for thought Melitta and Filtropa (I'm sure there are others but those are just the two I've researched) use a total chlorine free whitening process. It's an O2, H2O2, O3 process.

Anyone ever try a bamboo fiber filter?

It is all personal taste (and I mean how it tastes, not preference).

I have a pretty good palette (I can eat out and dupe the meal at home regardless of how complex it is... I once smelled a BBQ place over a mile away from where I was and asked directions to it which got some pretty odd looks and statements "there ain't one around here son")

I use the Melita #4 cone filters unbleached for my daily cup using the clever coffee dripper. I do rinse the filter with hot water and can't really detect this paper taste I hear about.
