auto-eject problem

I recently had a problem where my Hottop B-2K built-in thermocouple hits the 428F limit and ejects the beans prematurely. First time this happened was three weeks ago. It also happened on my first two roasts today, so I stopped roasting!

The beans were 20-40 seconds short of where I wanted to end the roast. Everything about the roasts appears normal, except that they did seem about 30 seconds slower than usual.

I hope someone may have a suggestion for how to resolve the problem. I blow the "leftover" chaff out of my Hottop before I do my weekly roasts, and I empty the chaff tray after every roast.

I reviewed the maintenance notes at the Hottop USA web site for "The beans are being ejected too early":

Here are my notes in response to the items listed ... I swap and clean the main rear filter every ten roasts. I did check that the fan is working properly, and I just cleaned it last week. My standard load is 195g, but the espresso roast shown above was 225g.

You can bypass the safety temp sensor. Not a good idea but I did it :)

hottop is not a good choice for espresso roasting unless you remove the safety functions and then it can catch on fire if you are not VERY careful.

Many thousands of people (including myself) have been roasting on Hottops for well over a decade, with the later models being even more capable than the earlier ones. Our roasters are also used on many farms and small roasteries as sample and cupping roasters. One was used to create the first, all-Kona espresso blend in Hawaii.

Thanks to Randy, I was finally able to pin-point the problem. Unfortunately, it was a case of user error.

This is a heavily modded Hottop, which I bought in 2012. I added insulation to the exterior of the Hottop in the fall of 2014. This was designed to eliminate the extra minute added to my roasts over the winter months.

I over-engineered the insulation when I replaced it in November of 2016. I noticed the immediate increase in the ET readings, but it did not bother me. Once the temps reached 70 degrees in Atlanta, it was just enough of an increase to bump up against the 428F limit.

I used a knife to remove some of the "excess" insulation. I have not hit the 428F limit in the last two weeks.

I could not recommend putting insulation in a hottop (or any home appliance roasting machine that did not come with it).

They are not designed to run at the high temperatures that a commercial roaster typically hits. Many times my commercial machine ET is running higher than the safety temp set by hottop to stop the roast.

If you buy and use a home coffee appliance you should try to stick within the constraints that it was designed to operate within.

I've been very happy using my hottop for many many years but I am not foolish enough to think it can match my commercial coffee roaster in performance.
