Thanks for the addition to the group. Seriously considering building a drum roaster along the lines of oldgrumpus's. Love the design and craftsmanship.

2 - 5kg gas-fired Hot Air Roaster
I have been busy building my 2nd roaster (also based on Roaster Rob designs)

My 1st roaster is detailed in a separate thread
I loved the control I could achieve with Mk 1 but it was always gonna be limited to around 1250g maximum.

Mark2 Goals
-up to 5kg load
-Gas fired with Proportional Control Valve
-Tight repeatable profile/temp control
-PID with adjustable Profiles
-fast cooling - ie under 2min
-Quiet - (want to hear 1C)

Basic specs/features :
2x Vacuum Cleaner Blowers c/w Speed Controller
8" SS thin wall pipe burner chamber
8" SS thin wall pipe RC
RC Sight Glass
0-60psig Regulator
Kelly Low Hysteresis Prop Valve
2942 Burner w/ Electronic Ignitor
loading hopper with slide / knife valve
chaff catcher / cyclone
unload/dump slide / knife valve
cooling tray c/w stirring vanes

Control System
Arduino Uno, TC4, LCDapter, 4x32LCD display,

I have plagiarised freely anything and everything I liked the look of from Homeroasters collective Brains Trust ! (many thanks esp to Roaster Rob, AllenB, and Green Cardigan and many other contributors) and added a few of my own ideas (some good Grin and some duds thumbdown)

It has taken way longer than I expected but it is now at the stage where it is running reasonably well

some pics (sorry 1st one upside down cant seem to fix Shock

That looks superb! I'd love to see a full roast video showing the operation.
Thanks Brad
I'll try to put one up tomorrow

Looks great. Capacity is enough to run a small coffee shop which is maybe what you are doing. pouring
Wow, Superb build! this would be a great visual piece to have in ones coffee shop. I would also mention Tamarian with his ground breaking work with proportional burner control and automation of DIY fluidbeds.

1/2 lb and 1 lb drum, Siemens Sirocco fluidbed, presspot, chemex, cajun biggin brewer from the backwoods of Louisiana
Quite right Allen - Thanks Tamarian for your hard work and plenty of great ideas

Video of Roast - (video making not my strong suit)

The Plywood Box on top of VCs is a muffler which works very well on the fully enclosed Flow thru VC but the 2nd VC is a Tangential bypass and not fully enclosed and still noisy.
I'll get around to replacing it with a flow thru or peripheral bypass at some stage to bring the noise level right down

I love what you built here. I am going to build something very similar. I hope you?re willing to give me some advice:

A) When you say ?thin wall pipe? how thin? I can source 24 gauge pipe at 8?. Do you think that will work fine? Would I need to reinforce it at all?

B) What did you use for the electronic igniter? This is one thing I?ve seen mentioned a few times across multiple builds, yet I have yet to see some links to products. This is puzzling to me still.

C) Are you using 240v single phase for the tandem blowers?

Thank you for any feedback you can provide!
Here's some burner ignition components I specd for someone a while back and should work together well:

Ignition controller

Carbide ignitor

Flame Sensor

Blower air proving switch

Gas Safety Shutoff

Hi Coffee Interest

Firstly I have to humbly apologise for not seeing / responding to your post

of course I will help any way I can

A) Thin wall pipe - I used 8" S/Steel 2mm wall thickness. no need for reinforcing. Its plenty strong

B) Igniter - I used a BBQ battery operated igniter. These produce 15-20kV and have 1-4 igniter outlets. I used two and carefully threaded these into the burner chamber from the bottom through insulated rubber grommets with two electrodes positioned just above the sievert burner. It works fine. I suggest insulating/isolating them both from the metalwork as I had a lot of trouble using just one electrode and the burner pipe for earth/return. It would damage or freeze the Arduino low voltage circuitry. If the rubber grommets for the High Voltage leads are below the burner they dont seem to get too much heat and have lasted 2 years thus far. Its far easier than trying to insert a manual igniter each roast and then having to plug the hole to avoid leaking heated air.

C) Are you using 240v single phase for the tandem blowers? - Yes - with cheap AC Speed controller from China (Ali-Express)

regds Phil
