I have been roasting just for a little while. Mostly using the P1 setting with good luck. Wondering if one could tell me when or why to use P2 or the others? I know Joe Behmor had a tip that at first crack, he would click P3, to extend the roast. Looking to understand the process a little more with the machine. Before this, I was Air Popper roasting. Thanks! John |

Pastor: Do you have the 1600 or 1600+? I have a coffee hour ministry of sorts with two and sometimes three congregations in northern New Jersey, and I roast with the 1600+ using the manual mode only. The reason why you have these different presets is to accommodate different bean origins. For instance, a P5 will be a gradual ramp up over a longer period of time that is supposed to bring out island bean origins a little better, a P4 is supposed to suit lower grown beans better, a P3 is supposed to suit Indonesian coffees better with it's particular heat profile, and P2 is supposed to suit Central American and African origins better. The only difference between P1 and P2 is that with the latter, it does not ramp up to 100% energy right away. For the first 20% of the cycle I think, it ramps up to 80% to assist in drying the beans, and the maximum roast cycle time is extended. With the manual mode (assuming you have the Plus model), you can throw all that out the window. In that case, P5 is an application of 100% energy, P4 is 75% energy, P3 is 50% energy, P2 is 25% energy, and P1 is 0% energy. There is also the point that there is the 2 speed drum. There is a Rosetta safety feature on there though, and here is an example of how it works. I load a pound of bean into the chamber, push P5, D, and then I add in the time until it maxes at 25:30 hit start and hit P5 again. It begins the roast cycle at 100% power for 17 minutes, but at the 8:30 mark as it is counting down, you will get a blinking message on the panel that says something like "until" and a count down number. If you don't hit that C button, it will go into an auto cool down cycle with the display reading "Error". That is usually a 12 or 13 minute cool down cycle. If you follow the above process but do not add any extra time in, the 8 minute mark will be a 12 minute mark, and you can reset the timer by pressing C. That will add another 3 minutes by the way. |
