Stepper or RC servo driven needle valve
allenb
When pondering a suitable needle valve with fine control that could be controlled via stepper or RC style continuous rotation servo using pwm, I found lots of really nice valves and many costing way more than I was willing to pay. I saw a small needle valve advertised for use with RC engines for gas metering that I now use for my propane control needle valve for manual control on my 1 lb drum roaster. Never got around to trying it with a stepper or RC servo but they should work fine and have a small enough shaft that should make it easy to fit an appropriate coupling between the two shafts. The needle thread pitch is very fine making fine incremental control easy. Also has mounting facilities to screw it down easily. I'm using it with 20 psi propane supply pressure.

This isn't the exact one I bought but all should be pretty much the same in how they operate.

I am working atm with a friend to build him a solution based on RC stuff usage, but keeping the actual machine valve.

His current manual valve looks like in the picture attached.
Such arm was been placed on the valve shaft:

The actuating servo is this, fitted with a similar arm as the valve:

And a ball head steering linkage between the two arms:

All the parts or similar can be sourced from a RC auto (buggy) shop.

The servo is driven via usb, using this small board, and a command line utility:

Placing in Artisan events dialog a command like: "UscCmd.exe -servo 0 {}", the servo can be moved according to burner slider or % buttons.

All parts were bought, assembled and tested, we are now evaluating a servo mount solution.

Interesting project. I have a regular smooth operating needle valve with a large knob. I have a small stepper motor with a wheel I will connect to the large knob to operate it. Many ways to operated a valve
