Halogen Radiant Roaster

Terrific engineering and sheet metal work!!!s:2s:1s:2s:1s:2s:1

No air flow hassle, less cleaning.
This needs to go directly into production. When can I buy one?

Wow, It just gets better and better! Very cool, Brian. s:1

This roaster inspired me to try building one of my own, but it's not nearly as nice as this one. Mine's a bit more of a junk-yard dog. Sorta looks like a home made tow truck on the back of a a '73 F100 pick up...

I'll post all about it once I get a little more time.
Respect the bean.

Nice unit and prototype. How quickly does the 4" bath fan cool one pound? I also roast 1 pound and spread the beans over a 20" fan for a one minute cool. Dan

Brian, I still feel guilty every time I look at your roaster.

I know, it's old, but instead opening a new thread for a question spot on topic, I hope someone still read here,so...

Where would be the most appropriate place for ET probe in such roaster ?

Check the OP's profile. There should be a email address you can try. He was last on this forum in 2017.

KKTO Roaster.

It looks like an awesome roaster. Have you considered using a thin perforated stainless drum? you can source these as perforated stainless waste baskets at Various retail stores. Awesome design.

Opinions from anyone than the OP are welcomed, though.
I am thinking the place for ET should be not exposed to direct radiant heat, so behind the reflector... now wondering how much heat radiates the reflector itself !

I have used a perforated stainless drum with propane for about 16 years with good results. I do use perforated ceramic blocks between the flame and the beans, which creates a barrier, but also transfers heat as an infrared radiator as the ceramic blocks heat to bright red at times. I am a big fan of the perforated stainless, number one because you can turn the temperature on a dime, and number two it releases all of the chaff and smoke as it roasts.

And your ET probe is placed... where ?

I measure the ambient temperature of the roaster at Bean level. I have used a long stem dial thermometer at times two measure temperature in the bean Mass, but it does not help me that much as long as I control the roaster temperature. All temperature readings are essentially approximation that you can learn to depend on at various points. No one has come up with a functional way to measure internal bean temperature while roasting, although we toy with the idea I'm a small Bean size capsule with a temperature sending unit, but could not find one that would tolerate the Heat.
