Double current than your heater, and 1.4x the voltage of the mains.
For an 1300W 230V lid, which means 6 Amps current draw, I would go with a minimum of 12 amps 400V diode, but for 5 cents more I am more safe with 16 Amps 600V

The diode and SCR solutions are exclusive, you should decide which of them.

Double Boiler arrived today. I drilled the 4 mm holes in the inner pot, got the bearings installed, cut a false floor using the lid and mounted that also. Tomorrow I'll tinker with the agitator.

I've got holes in the sides also. There spaced out more that on the bottom. Are these hole just for chaff removal?

I also got the agitator working. Not sure if it's the best but I suppose a roast will tell the whole store. Seems to work best with 350 grams of beans. I'm going to work on another agitator like the fancy unit you designed while holed up here at home. The first agitator doesn't get down low enough with 200 grams of beans. With 350 is looks like it mixes well.

The holes have dual purpose
Heat circulation and chaff removal
You will see the chaff spinning above the the agitating beans and you can judge where the holes should go from observing

Agitation is important
It must mix the beans like rolling stones- constantly on the move, not just a mass of beans pushed around and around to achieve a great roast

Have a look at some of my videos with the red bean test and copy the results with your setup

Keep your file name simple, no special characters of spaces. Don't use preview post or reply, for some reason it disables the attached photo.

Keep your image file small. I use resize in MS paint and scale down to 800X600 or so. No need to have 4000X3800 for web viewing.

The chaff is not exhausted from the roasting insert by the bottom holes, conversely, the air is sucked by the turbine in a vertical column, from the bottom.
The bottom holes are required mainly to ensure a good airflow in the beans bed.

Having a different approach than original KK design, by using a wider and lower insert, that allows using the whole glass area of the lid, I can observe better how is the chaff flow in such oven.
After absorbed and ejected radially by the lid turbine, the chaff path is a descending spiral along the walls to the bottom of the pot.

I will give you the physical engineering explanation behind the chaff removal in a KKTO design
Please note that appropriately 90% of chaff is removed to the lower chamber

Chaff spins along the side wall of the perforated pot and above the agitating beans during the early part of the roast

Some smaller chaff exits via the holes on the sides via fan forces
Note - Beans roasting expand in volume size x 3 fold or more

While the bean volume increases the chaff is folded into the agitating bean mass and ground down into smaller pieces
The chaff now smaller works itself to the lower area and exit via the lower sides and bottom of the perforated insert

Note - Slits with a raised gill ( like shark gills ) on the side wall will catch and remove a good percentage of the early circulating chaff
But that is an design idea for a fully manufactured roaster

A tip I found about the hard way:
When you make cuts in the roasting chamber, be sure to smooth out the holes with sanding. I found that the drilled holes with sharp edges acted like a cheese grater, slicing/damaging the beans as they spin around.

In the direction of the vortex spiral.
If not ever done a roast, so rotation unknown, then drop some hay/dried grass inside the pot, and start the lid at lowest temperature.
Will see the grass drying, then raised by the airflow, thrown outside the pot and spinning along the wall.
For my lid the vortex spinning direction is CCW, so the opening for chaff collecting (cyclone exhaust) has the orientation according to this rotation direction.

I need to work on the agitator as the roast isn't real even. I also wasn't prepared to get the beans cool fast enough. But, there's plenty of heat.

Generally in a TO the chaff spins counter clockwise

With the agitator
Try to copy the shape of the original solid unit in the photo
Notice the higher profile at the shaft and again at the side
This shape mixes the beans in a figure 8

Silicone tubing should be high temp

Spent the morning fabbing a new agitator, using a Dremel, files and a drill press. Down the road I may just have a CNC company spit a few of these out.
Did 3 back to back roasts and just like our drum roaster it just gets better as the machine heat soaks. The 300 g batch in the pic reached DE @ 4:30, 1C @ 8:17. No more burnt beans.woohoo

Missed something. Still have holes to plug where I removed the handles. I'm going to flip em' so there out of the way. And order silicone tube, heat resistant of course.
