Good morning, Home Roasters! My name is Chad and I've been home roasting with a modified Poppery II, for the past 4 years. During this time, my wife and I are convinced coffee has become more of a way of life, and not just a fleeting hobby, so we're looking to upgrade our equipment. We're beginning the process of researching small drum roasters (500g - 1kg), and have been snooping around the threads here on this forum for reviews and advice. I look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas! |

Thanks for the suggestions. As a current modified Poppery II roaster, I'm certainly not opposed to the DIY option. Having developed a feel for the fluid bed roasting experience, I was looking into maybe just building a larger fluid bed roaster, but the KKTO is also very intriguing - nice work there![]() Cheers! Yes the fluid bed roaster would be a great DIY project However it?s more demanding engineering wise as all the detailed requirements need to be on speck Once done it will be a long term roaster The KKTO is a hybrid design that includes mechanical agitation with reuse of expended heat in a similar way to a fluid bed You just need to follow the build thread and don?t stray from the well researched specs. ![]() Is the most uniform and wide spread heat source you can have ready to use without any tinkering and for less than $100. Also, the easiest build, can be done in 2-3 hours if having all the parts on the table. No welding, no metal works, just drilling and screws. Not the last, you can start roasting with great results without any electronics hanging around, just a timer and senses. Edited by renatoa on 12/31/2020 4:26 AM |
