Moved to the machine own sub-forum, because is not a drum roaster. Having beans rolling/tumbling in a cylinder does not make a machine "drum roaster". As in accounting we have "follow the money", to figure a machine nature we should "follow the heat", i.e. how is the energy produced, transported and transferred to beans. |

Ah, sorry, didn't notice the sub-forums.. I could have just read that instead of asking the question in the wrong place. |

I've had a Gene for a few years-- I now own 2. I've roasted a lot of drinkable coffee but not great. I actually believe I roasted better coffee with popcorn poppers, but I could be misremembering. I have about 25 pounds of various unroasted beans, but keep opting to buy roasted coffee from great roasters like Heart and George Howell... I 'd spend a few grand on a nice machine if I knew for certain I could match what they do. If you ever achieve a great roast on your Gene, I'd like to buy a small sample bag..... IMO the Gene has severe limitations on what it's capable of producing...... but some of my beans are probably crap too......I like light roasts My roasts do taste better than Charbucks |

I have found lately my choice of beans is at odds with first crack roasting. Roaster style/choice shouldn't have much sway over finished product if the roast parameters (profile) are properly held. Will get flack for that remark. With the popcorn roaster you had to be micromanaging the small roast at a scale you don't for your Gene, but I bet the Gene is more consistent in results overall. Finding the sweet spot in process is the tough part. I end up drinking my mistakes anyways. |

The greatest issue I see with Gene is the heat control, especially at start. It's full on-off, no shades of gray between... and full ON means more than 300 C, which is not a good temperature to attack the beans from second zero. They missed a great moment when redesigned electronics for V2, still maintaining the anachronistic mechanical relay design from pre-millenium. Replacing the mech relay with a SSR, for very close price, would allow them to approach heat control more gradually and intelligent than it is now. |

I think every Roaster type takes time to get the best from it. If you can get a sample from someone who is making good coffee with a Gene, would be a great start. I can say my FB is very different then my TO-Cafemasy combo. Lots of things to tweak on it. |
