Rebuilding Vintage Coffee Maker
farmroast
Am hopefully going to bring this relic back to life. It's a 1930s Reneka from France. It is one of the first automatic commercial brewers. It was designed to brew something between Italian espresso and brewed coffee. Maybe like the Krups moka brew. The filter basket is 180mm. The unit wall mounts and is 4 feet tall.

A beauty Farmroast! That is a cool catch and interesting design. I like how it allows the brew pots to swing over under the basket and then back for serving. I see two handles on the metal basket assy. What's the 2nd handle do?

What's the story behind how you came to own this historic brewer?

It was an ebay "pickup only" scoop, 2hrs away in NY state.
Probably came from large hotel in NYC or possibly Albany. Nice winter restore project. Along with the 180mm tamper :(

Really that is a big portafilter. Haven't seen switches like that since we finished building Peach Bottom and Three Mile Island. WOW really nice. Now to get a cup to match !

What's the thing on the top?

Dan
What a fun item! I've never seen such a device. Looks straight forward. It looks like the PF is pressurized, perhaps only slightly so, but it may make coffee more like a vacpot than drip.

The middle section (water heater) is set on balance arms. When filled with water slightly lowers and the small rod in the back runs a on/off switch in the very top box. As the water exits the whole middle section rises and shuts off the heating elements thus it's one of the first "Automatic" brewers.

Hey Ed, it's the least I could do to honor that beautiful relic from the industrial revolution! The chrome, the tubes, the switches... it's gorgeous. Looking at the sight glass... hey, is there some coffee left in there? Antique coffee!

Wishing you good fun and great coffee,
CHAD

Well... I am waiting for my invitation to the inaugural brewing session once it's 21st century ready!

;)

farmroast
All my forums family H) are invited to the inaugural brewing. I hope to use it as an educational piece. Planning to have it at next years Eastern States Exposition in the MA. state building (the new england state fair). with an attendance of 1 million. Will also consider getting it to other events after I build a shipping container for it. Hope to have it rebuilt by spring. My free time for coffee projects is being split with a project designing a sample roaster for coffee farmers who live in remote areas of the world and don't get to cup their production! Ed

update So far no luck in finding much for information on this thing. Reneka changed ownership more then 12 years ago and the new ownership doesnt seem to have much connection with the past. I did find someone in France with a nice collection of old espresso machines. He has a Reneka that is kinda similar, see pic. My brother is going to be visiting for Thanksgiving and we are going to open up the main head then(dont want to bend or crack anything while splitting open, definitely two person job.).

farmroast,
that is a great looking coffee machine! I'm working on a little project (renewing a 92 Faema S87-2 Espresso machine. I joined another coffee forum that is based in Europe, and some of the members have some really kick ass vintage machines that they restored. You might want to join up over there and post a few pics. These guys are friendly, and willing to help us Yanks out. My Italian Faema machine was fairly easy to figure out from a detailed parts manual, and I still don't read or write Italian ;)

Gary So far I listed on HR, TMC(EU), H-B, CG, Coffee Snobs(AU). It's kinda amazing how little appreciation "history" gets these days. Here's an interesting site of a really nice museum of espresso machines made in Italy.

I think for too many of us newBs ... our perspective of history starts now, unfortunately. We'll get excited to re-invent the wheel if it's packaged nicely. We don't even understand many of the basics - which is why everyone salivates for a Technivorm or Rancilio or whatever's the highest popularity geek item, but pity us because we don't know no better:|. Us latecomers are bowled over by advertising and "sounding cool" on a forum. We tend to regurgitate buzz words. But, honestly, I probably mis-pronounce "Rancilio" because I've only read the word!

To put it another way, we're intimidated, so we ignore (but hopefully with secret fascination for the history). I'd rather learn. I'm hoping you'll teach me a thing or three. Thanks for posting here... keep us up to date, Ed!

Chad,
Thanks! That was a great read...
Somehow, I missed seeing it. Now, I see the light!
Jim did a pretty nice job, on a considerably neglected machine.s:2

I'm not looking forward to taking apart my water valve, either s:7
