I got nothin’…

But a love of a good cup of coffee.
Recently got turned on to this forum. Years ago dabbled with a dog bowl/heat gun with okay success. I enjoyed the smells and it was interesting to buy green beans and turn them into my own. But life happened and now 10 years or so later, I want to roast my own again.
I don’t have any equipment and currently possess little to no skill which is why I am here.
i do want consistent, reproducible results (as I’m sure everyone does!) and at my consumption rate of about a pound per week, I’d like to be able to roast 250-500g batches. I like probably medium roasts, something that allows the notes of the bean to shine; one of the local roasters I frequent calls it vibrancy.
I’ve read a bit about the Behmor, Gene Cafe and recently, the KKTO. I’m intrigued by the KKTO, either building or buying a kit. The results seem pretty amazing. I’m an engineer and pharmacist by training so not afraid to experiment to build skills. I also don’t want to reinvent the wheel and would be happy using other users profiles or whatever as a starting point.
I’m roasting for myself only and since I haven’t discovered a money tree, I’m going to have to be reasonable with my investment.

I appreciate the help and advice in advance.
Thanks!
Nate

Off the shelf the Behmor is your best option with 450gram roast

KKTO roaster kits are no longer available
However a KKTO DIY build is very achievable if you are handy with tools & metalwork
This roaster built right based on my instructions can roast up to 1kg

Welcome !
You could also consider buying or reproducing the commercial fancy version of heatgun/bowl machine, one less known to non-europeans, but the absolute best bang/$ for half pound class, at 240 Euro, the Dieckmann RoestMeister:
https://www.dieck...ister.html

Was my transition machine from popcorn to actual turbo oven I am using.
Still owning one but used very rarely, just for nostalgia Grin

For more than 300 grams TO is the absolute winner, as energy efficiency consumption, low noise, heat uniformity, cost and easiness of build.
Having all parts sourced and laid on the table, I estimate less than two hours build time, and what is even more important, ready to roast immediately without any "strings attached", i.e. electronics, even without a thermometer !

I reviewed the dieckman roaster and found it wasn’t up to the task.

Except chaff management, there is nothing you can blame it, compared to a BM/bowl hotgun roasting. Does a better beans circulation then many DIY solutions, imo.

Maybe you tried the greens that comes with the machine when bought new, they sucks, indeed... special processing to remove silver skin, that I'm afraid also removes flavors...

Bummer the KKTO kits are no longer available.
I see the links to your build doc work now that I have a HR log in. A 1kg roast capacity is pretty amazing and likely much more than I’ll need.
Thank you for the help. I’ll check out the build slides.

I’ve never been able to pull off a decent roast in the Behmor when roasting over 250 grams. Slows it down a bit too much. Also hard to control due to it being fully radiant. My choice would be KKTO.

Hi Nate, I like my little popcorn modified FB roaster. I roast 227g usually as it gives me 2 times to screw up a 1 pound bag of greens. Now it will float 1 pound of beans but have not tried to roast that yet but should be enough heat for a non-winter roast. I vent it out a window and connect it to a computer for less than $200 CAD. So $140 USD?

I have been testing a CafeMasy-TO combo and it needs improvement still.

I think I need to add more air to this setup but time will tell.

Any chance you live in Canada? I could mail you a couple of the FB samples and you could have some reference of what can be accomplished in a small FB roaster. I have been roasting for less then 1 year.
