Veni - vidi - hello popper!
Billy Bean
I took out the aluminum bin I made, it worked well but I wanted to make a “fluid bed” alike popper so it is of no use to burry the beans in a hopper where I can’t see them. Did a little test with this version, it didn’t go bad but I am going to take time to think things over. Did enough test roasts, so for the coming time I have enough roasted beans, no pressure.

I’ve been away from here a few days, deciding which way to go and this morning I did a test (V8) and it will probably my last one with this popper.
The test went well but I need to adjust the voltage meter on the fan constant, it is very nervous and the worst part is that none of my tests are consistent, good or bad. If I “improve” one thing, the next problem shows up, it is a never-ending story.

So, I will abandon this popper project and look for another one, something that I can control better.

I am thinking of a Stir Crazy with a turbo oven on top, I know I can get the temperature in that way, air is provided, chaff extractor is not difficult to make, stir arms need probably some adjustments, all do-able and nothing to be afraid of.

And most important, I can replicate my (bigger) roasts.

Haven’t decided yet if I will post the build here as I don’t think there will be any interest for it.
Here is the video of my last test.

Kind of like this? I was just testing mine and I thought the Skywalker was a good price, not so much anymore?

It made good coffee, one thing I noticed as it developed coffee aroma right away.
I did about 10 roast on it. It was fine to roast outside but I need to do much more work to have it setup right for inside.

Yes, EXACTLY like that. Grin

Bought for CAD$ 15.00 at the thrift store, works like a charm. Bought a Stir Crazy (alike) this afternoon as well. I am going to focus on perfecting the stir arms first before starting to roast. I am happy to get rid of the extra air fan and noise.

Did you modify stir arms? Image perhaps?

Do you measure temperature or just go on time?

I have a strong duct fan close by, I can do something with that. It is actually in a small dedicated room.

Funny thing though…..I have a wood laser cutter/engraver and it came with “green” protective glasses. Never used them but If I look through them while the turbo oven light is on, I almost have normal colored view.

Might be best to start a new thread.

Yes I did make a new stir arm, out of a BBQ skewer. It works great for 1/2 pound when it stirs in CW direction, not as good going CCW. Roasting 1 pound it would change directions a few times, needs a better motor for 1 pound.

You could probably do well with a microwave motor

This is more of a test system and it was good enough to explore more.
I have a SS pot and Two different bowls to go in it for different size batches.
A 60RPM AC motor. I want to use a hot air gun to heat the base rather then the hot plate option. Just to assist not take over the roasting.

You can find some good Turbo oven threads on this site that have some great info in them.

Lol, at first I did not understand your remark about the stainless pots, but now I realize I am just a small fish in the pond, you all think bigger…. I am just alone so I will use the hot plate with stir arms 200 – 240 grams is more than enough for me and at least it is double the amount I could do with the air popper without serious modifications.

I think you are on the good track with your plans. Good luck!

Thanks, the doctor said it was KKTO-itis, a rare form of stupidity. Two extra espressos a day would solve the problem within a week.
