I have a questions.. im trying to experiment with riasting.. i roasted 3 cup of nicaraguan at 200 degrees for 1 hr and 30 min.. is that to long?

Hmmm. First I'd pick the cherries then lay them in the driveway and dry process 'em for a few weeks. Be sure to stir 'em up a lot so they dry evenly. Then hand sort 'em and bag 'em up.

OK, I have no idea, but I couldn't resist. Maybe in seven years when my tree has fruit, I'll remember the answer here.

Here is a copy and paste from AN AUSSIE COFFEE TREE SELLER

Description: The first coffee plant of economic importance was Coffea Arabica. It grows to the height of 7-8 meters but the cultivated plants are cut to the height of 2-4 meters to get more width.

The white coffee flower has five petals and the fragrant flowers smell like jasmine. The coffee berries are cherry-sized and green at first, turning dark red later on. They are edible and sweet, but the coffee producing part is the beans inside. The ripening takes eight months. The coffee tree starts flowering at 2-4 years old and it can simultaneously have flowers and berries in all stages of development.

MAKING COFFEE:
• Harvest the berries when they are quite ripe - a reddy-purple colour.

• Throw your cherries into an ordinary clean plastic bucket. Then start mashing the cherries to get the pulp off. This should expose each cherry's two beans inside a silvery casing. Sometimes you might need to manually squash some of the cherries to pop the beans out.

• Add a little water to cover them and a bit of sugar, then put it in a shady spot and leave it to ferment for a few days.

• Sift the fermented mixture, isolating the encased beans. The first skin around the bean is usually very slippery after sitting in water fermenting. A good way to remove this skin is by rubbing it with an abrasive washing up pad. After you've completed this process for all beans (which is usually the longest step), wash them and dry in the shade for two weeks.

• Break off the second casing in whatever way you get success. One suggestion is to rub the bean pod against particle board. Or else physically peel off the second silvery skin. Letting the beans dry for a few weeks may make it easier to remove the skin.

• Roast the beans in a medium oven for around 5-6 minutes until you hear the first crack, then reduce the heat for another 5 or 6 minutes until you hear the second crack, then remove the roasted beans from the oven and cool quickly (e.g. throw into the freezer). You can then store the beans in a cool dark place before grinding.

Way Cool! Ginny, please ask Marci if she's ready to sell bags of coffee cherries. I'd like to try this too. If we do our own home roasting, why not go all the way... make some machines to do home processing too?

That is good information. Just on a lark, I pulled out three Kona seeds in parchment that someone gave me. I'm soaking them in water and will move them to peat pots in a few days. Let's see what happens.

Being above sea level at 3400 ft I do not know if I can grow this plant I got for my birthday. It is still alive after 8 weeks.

Any special grow needs for this plant?

On another note: my local Woodcrafters had a coffee burl half, about 3-4 pounds for about $50. The wood was a light greyish / tan with little figure except in the burl itself. It seemed tight grained and relatively hard. One of the salesmen asked if it smelled like coffee when it was cut. (this was wrapped in plastic) I told him even green coffee beans didn't smell like coffee.

White flower is correct. When it blooms, it smells like jasmine or if you have been in an orange grove when it is in bloom, there is a similarity, but not as strong as citrus blooms.

I received (4) arabica plants from Hirt Gardens (Ohio) last week. I followed the instructions re: acclimitization and water before transplanting to separate 8" pots. All appear strong and healthy and have added height in the past week.
Thanks to who ever found the questforcoffee blog - I didn't realize the bone meal will spark flower growth.
The plants will be wintering inside.
Just curious - what is the most northern (and southern) latitude for sustained coffee tree growth?

I thought coffee trees will grow pretty much anywhere if they're kept far away from freezing. But you'll get really bad coffee unless you're in thin air.
