First Roast
Auto Profile 012
Rwanda Gakenke
350g 14% loss

The beans might look a little dark but seem to be the same color all the way through as far as I can see.
I checked a few beans, Roast is fairly even looking.

Bean cooler worked well. It did require some stirring to cool a bit more evenly.

I used a solo cup and my hand to fill from the back pouring forward, a spout of some kind would be better.

Lots of roast smell during cool down, manual said keep the exit drop door open during cool down?
Bean cooler might be pulling some air out of the roaster?

Thanks for posting your experience. I have one on the way.

I just purchased one of these. I cut the spout off to accommodate beans. It works great.

BTW, that 14% W/L is right down my alley for a light-med.

I would like to make a bean chute so I can drop a full batch if possible.

The hole is slightly tapered at the front it's 88.25mm and at the back it's 94.5mm wide.
I would like to keep using the drop door so it can be about 3.5cm deep at the most.

It needs to be bigger then the solo cup to get 500g in it but 350g looked like a good load for this unit.

As I already mentioned, the simplest chute extension is a pizza slice tray, cut to the 85-90 mm charge opening.

Also, for a scoop replacement consider a straight spout, any rounding means beans spilling on sides.
Something as attached is the best fit I could think.

Was thinking more along a permanent mounted chute, kind of like this but it might be a bit small.
A cheese box grater might be the right size if it never had the larger holes.

This roast is not as even but it could be the beans.
Looking forward to tasting these in a few days.

Under 250g the risk having the probe not completely immersed into beans become significant, imo.

I was using up a partial bag and thought I would try the 1/2 pound batch. I did think it went a bit long and was going to drop when the auto buzz went off. Won't taste test for a few days but the chew test was dark & sweet.

Kenyan AA
255g 13% loss

I made a chute out of a Luncheon Meat can 5cmX9.5cm
Worked great for this load (255g) but would need to be 2 cans high to get a 500g load.

Please, can you note the roasting finish info when using preset profiles: FC and drop, temp and time.
Are you using Assist mode ?

HarryDog
Just using Auto mode and the profile listed, this one was "011".
No assist mode, yet.
This drop time was 8:55.

So FC is lower, don't exactly remember this one but others were around 365F.

Have not been recording the FC and drop, temp and time.
Just getting comfortable with using the roaster so far.

Mike_Mathis
I'm interested in how those Kenyan AA's taste. I love some Kenyans.

How did the roasted coffee taste.

Auto Profile 012
Rwanda Gakenke
The Aroma: Sweet acidic note, not much or anything else.
At first you are greeted with a mix of normal coffee notes nice warm reception.
It transitions into a baker Spice blend the heats up like ginger chilies on the tongue.
The finish is a splash of Red Wine that is controlled and not overwhelming.
The aftertaste is all spice from before the Red Wine very nice.
This was a lucky win.

Auto Profile 013
Robusta
The Aroma is a light Robusta note.
You get a up front fruity note followed by a very chocolaty coffee.
I don't think I will drink this by itself but think it will be great in blends.

Auto 011
Kenyan AA
This was a miss.
Very flat tasting with a vegetal after taste.
Needs more development for sure, maybe a medium auto roast?

I think all three coffee's taste much different compared to a roast on my FB, just a note I had put the Rwanda Gakenke on my "do not buy again list" and this has definitely changed my mind.

Can't wait to test some of my favorite coffee's!

Should I buy one?

HarryDog, do you have any ideas why the Kenyan was a bust? As you know, a light roast should be right down the alley for this origin. I am surprised that it turned out this bad. Do you record weight loss? If you do, I'm curious what this one was. When mine comes in, I will do what I can to help this origin work. As I said earlier, I love a good Kenyan. One of the first things I will do in light of your report is set it for a medium and manually stop it just before the profile does. In other words, aim for a med/light. Does this make sense to you?

I don't think I can answer that for you. So far one roast was very good, second was different then on the FB but just as good for different reasons, last roast just needed more development, I think.

I want to do about 4 more roasts on beans I like and have ordered a few times, if they taste great I have to say it's worth it.

I wanted to have a little drum roaster to see if I could roast with less acidity and so far it does to my taste.

Renatoa has posted some full manual roasts that would be good to try as well.

I'm going to do a auto roast for wet hulled and washed as well before I start to use assist mode.

Hi Mike, 13% loss I think it needed a longer development period, you might just go a little longer using assist mode, mine was 8:55 maybe 9:30? This might not be enough? The Rwanda beans are grown 400 feet lower, I thought they might be close?
Maybe a medium auto roast might be a better place to start?

Renatoa posts a 11min roast for naturals with 14% loss, might be a little long? This would be very close to the Rwandan roast only more controlled.

My Roaster is a 120v and roasted at 123v at the plug, Renatoa is probably using a 220v roaster.

The 14% loss was due to longer development especially.
30 seconds faster drop and might be under 13%.

Lostx403
I used a 4 cup measuring cup and it was pretty decent at allowing the beans to make it in without any mess. The bean chute is a bit of a pain point.

Best results out of the 3 I did earlier today

Roast today a Kenya, the cupping revealed the best of about 15 roasts with Skywalker to date.

Started with preheat at 200C, which was stable enough at 55% power and 50% fan.
Charged at these values, so no power bump at charge as happens in auto modes, others already wrote and complained about this.

Hello Renatoa, was this a 250g charge?

renatoa
Yes, 250g.
Also forgot to mention that the power percents are now "real", because voltage for roaster was adjusted to the 230V EU standard.
The previous roast levels were about 5% lower because my higher mains voltage, at 238V.

When I dropped beans, I immediately transferred to my homemade bean cooler. Much quicker to cool according to info from renatoa and Josh video.
I had 3 beans that were charred completely black. All other beans looked great. I figure those 3 went somewhere they were NOT suppose to go. I had 1 bean charred in 1st roast. I figure they somehow sat on heater cage for a few. Just a guess though.

DE seems a lot higher than normal... evaluated with trier ?
Dry ends when any hue of green/silver is gone, but yellow not still there...
Yellow shows clearly you are into Maillard, thus more than 162C, where sugars starts caramelize.
Other than vision, you can use smell to evaluate dry ends... when smell turns from fresh grass to hay.
