roasting time SK vs CafeGene
bobinaz
Hello all. I've only done 2 roasts on the SW using auto mode profile 22. The beans (288g)were Rwanda washed processed.
I had 1st crack at 6min 30 sec. Roast shut down at 8 min. 43 sec. Result was a good medium roast.

I roasted with the CG for over a year and my typical type for those beans (230g)at a med roast was usually 11 to 13 minutes. On that roaster I would dump the beans and cool externally.

Wondering if others have experienced shorter roasting times with the SW vs CafeGene?

You are right, and is normal to be this way.
Both have close power, in the 1000W range.
But... IR heating is the most efficient way of heating, minimal waste. IR radiation has no other way to escape from the drum other than through the beans bed, or hitting the drum wall, and from there again into the beans.
Gene has a lot more heat waste and leaks... partially goes into the glass cylinder and radiated outside, then a lot of heat is exhausted, because recirculating heat in hot air machines is not easy to do... as a result, very little goes into the beans.

The outcome... as you observed... longer times, less loads, lower efficiency.

thanks, makes sense.
